Stepping up my game

They didn't come into the chamber until the evening when they brought my meal. Drake was the one who came in first with a tray of food, and the others followed close behind.

At the sight of the men who murdered my mate, I felt this instant surge of anger. I wanted to thrust a stake through their chests and watch them sputter blood before they died. But I held back. I was aware doing that would cost me my life because they were stronger than I. I doubt they would watch me try to murder them without doing anything.

“We had the maids prepare your favourite,” Drake said as he dropped the tray of food on the bed and stepped back. My eyes went to the food. My stomach rumbled at the sight of the delicacy and the tantalizing aroma wafting from it, but I didn't lift my hands towards it.

“Can you feed me?” I begged sweetly, retching inwardly. This was what Ryth advised me to do. If I wanted to get on their good side, I had to earn their trust by acting like the mate they thought I was.
