A Serious Demonic Problem

Out in the darkness of the night, Kelvin saw a lone figure, clad in black, sneaking past the male dormitory.

“Who’s that?” Kelvin asked, as he looked out the window. The physical details of the said person were obscured by shadows, and as such, Kelvin was having a hard time figuring out who this person was.

“I don’t know who that is, but that person is super shady. I really don’t want to stick my nose in other people’s business; but my curiosity is sky high. Why sneak out? Where is this person going to at this hour?”

Driven by his wide sense of curiosity, Kelvin decided to follow this person. He easily jumped out his dorm window, and landed perfectly fine, with no injuries at all.

‘I guess having a demon stuck inside you, has its little advantages.’ Kelvin thought.

‘I’ll have to be really careful and sneaky. This person doesn’t seem to be scared of the demon hunters that are standing guard outside.’

Kelvin followed the mysterious person for a while, trying to be as quiet and stealthy as he could; but honestly, Kelvin knew next to nothing when it comes to stealth and silent footsteps. So it didn’t take long for the mysterious person to notice him; and on seeing Kelvin, the mysterious person started to run.

“Shit, I’ve been spotted.” Kelvin said, as he ran after this mysterious person.

The lone mysterious person darted through the student’s residential compound, seemingly desperate to escape. Kelvin was in hot pursuit, trying to catch up. Finally, the chase came to a climax, as the mysterious person quickly and easily scaled the academy walls.

Panting and sweating, Kelvin looked up to the mysterious person. Standing on top of the wall, the said mysterious person turned and looked at Kelvin; and underneath its black clothing was a white kabuki mask, with a peculiar design.

The lone figure looked at Kelvin for a few seconds, before vanishing into the night.

“Well, this was a total waste of time. I didn’t even get to see this shady person’s face. I wonder who that was.” Kelvin said, as he returned back to his dorm room.

On reaching his dorm room, Kelvin fell on the bed with exhaustion.

“I know, I’m not supposed to lie down on the bed, but I’m spent. I think I’ll just rest for a little while, and then continue with my training.” Kelvin said.

“Yeah, I should rest.” He continued, while closing his heavy eye lids.

The next day…

The sun rises in the horizon, casting a warm glow over the Glenview Isles.

The academic board of directors was having a meeting once again; but this time, it was just the head teacher and the principal.

“So, is there any news about the unconscious students?” Mrs. Diane asked.

“Yes, great news indeed. The divine healers have found a way to bring the students back to consciousness. It’s only a matter of time, before all the students will be back to their usual activities.” Sylvester replied.

“Good; their training should be doubled in order to make up for lost time.” Mrs. Diane said.

“Also, there’s been a series of missing person reports. Place a call to detective Roxanne, to conduct a proper investigation.”

“I’ll do just that.” Sylvester said.

“I believe that’s all.” Mrs. Diane said, as she stood up to leave.

“There’s one more thing; since the end trials was a complete disaster, I think we should come up with a different activity to grade the physical abilities of the students.” Sylvester suggested.

“You’re right. I’ll leave that to you; tell me when you think of something. I’ll be taking my leave; I have some urgent matters to attend to at the head quarters.” Mrs. Diane replied, while leaving the meeting room.

Kelvin slowly stirs from his slumber. He stretches his arms above his head and feels the warmth of the morning sun on his face.

“Ugh, I can’t believe I slept off.” Kelvin said, as he rolled out of bed.

“Shit! Did the demon take control?!!” Kelvin asked, while taking a quick look at the demon concealing bracelet.

Surprisingly, the crack on the bracelet didn’t increase at all.

‘That’s a relief; but this doesn’t prove anything. I won’t know if the demon actually took control or not. I have to speak with George.’ Kelvin thought, as he made his way to the bathroom to wash up and get dressed for the day.

Student calls, was been handled by their individual dorm masters. So, because of that, the dorm masters were given a separate room in both the male and female dormitories.

Kelvin came out of his dorm room, and began to walk in the direction of the dorm master’s room. As Kelvin approached the room, he could hear the faint sound of music coming from within.

He raised his hand and knocked on the door, the sound echoing through the hallway. He waited a moment before the door swung open, revealing Griff Hyde, the male dorm master, wearing his full demon hunter uniform.

“Good morning, dorm master.” Kelvin said.

“Morning; I wasn’t expecting anyone this early. Come on in.” Griff said, stepping aside to let Kelvin enter.

Kelvin thanked him and stepped into the room, taking in the sight of a beautifully furnished room, with a plush cream-colored carpet, polished hardwood floors, and elegant furniture. The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries and paintings, and the windows were draped with sheer, flowing curtains.

Griff walked up to an old tape recorder on the table, and turned off the music coming from it.

“So Ken, how may I help you? As you can see, I was just about to step out.” Griff said, as he turned to look at Kelvin.

“I would like to speak with my guardian. I’m running low on points so I want to request for some more cash.” Kelvin replied.

“Okay, just give me a minute.” Griff said.

He walked towards a trunk at the room, and after searching for a while, he pulled out a really odd looking device.

The device had a box-like rectangular shape, with a small circular orb sticking out in the middle. And right in front of the orb, was a small 4-digit combination system with a sequence of numbers.

“What’s that?” Kelvin asked.

“This is a voice-only communication device, which creates a long-ranged link between users on each end.”

“This communication device was given to both the guardians and parents of our students, shortly after your practical entrance examinations.” Griff explained.

“Okay, but why not use a normal phone or something like that?” Kelvin asked, as he looked at the strange communication device.

“Well, using a smart phone would increase the chance of call tracking, and further increase the risk of being exposed to the public.” Griff replied.

‘He’s right. The demon hunters are really doing anything they can to conceal their presence.’ Kelvin thought.

“So, how do I use it?” Kelvin asked.

“It’s really easy actually. We assigned a specific 4-digit code to each of the communication devices. So, all you have to do is to align the 4-digit combination system in the right order of your guardian’s communication device code.” Griff explained.

“Okay let’s see, your guardian’s communication device code should be 3302.” Griff said, while checking his phone to confirm.

Kelvin aligned the 4-digit combination system in the 3302 number order, and almost immediately, the circular orb gave off a blue glow.

After a while, George’s voice could be heard coming from the orb.

“Hello” George said.

“Hello George; it’s me Ken.”

“Ken it’s nice to hear from you. What about Carl? I hope you boys are okay?” George asked.

“Yeah, we’re fine. Our experience in the academy is really cool too.” Kelvin replied.

“That’s good to hear. So what’s the matter Ken? Why did you call?”

‘I can’t tell him about the demon, with the dorm master by my side.’ Kelvin thought, as he glanced at the dorm master.

‘I’ll have to think of something.’

“Well, you see… I’m really in need of points, so I-”

Just as Kelvin was about to complete his sentence, a call came from Griff’s phone.

“Excuse me Ken I have to take this.” Griff said, as he left the room.

“Thank goodness, he left the room. George, I have a problem; a serious demonic problem.”
