Chapter 19

"I get what you mean my dear and I am genuinely sorry for having to go that far. It's just that, if I didn't go that far, you'll most likely have never taken me seriously and I'm more than certain we wouldn't be planning a wedding anytime soon. You know how much I love and adore you my dear daughter and I want nothing but the best for you all the time. You literally gave your mother and I no other choice but to butt in because you were so engrossed in your professional life that you forgot what having a personal life outside work actually felt like and as your father, I couldn't keep watching you live like that," Marcos explained.

Olivia shook her head in disbelief. "Don't get me wrong dad, I get where you're coming from and I understand that you were simply worried about my future outside my work but you, more than anyone else in the world, knows how hard I worked to get to this position. You know how hard I fought against the stereotype and the underestimation just to be where I am today and you threatened to turn it all to dust, all because you wanted me to get married? Make it make sense dad!" Olivia snapped.

"You know what's even funnier dad, it's the fact that it turned out that both you and mom don't know me as much as you claim you do because as it turned out, I actually had a man in life and I wasn't as single and as alone as you guys thought. After finding out that I actually wasn't going to die to a single woman, instead of you being happy for me, you immediately started to plan a wedding, forgetting that I'm not going to marry myself. Imagine how the poor guy must have felt when he found out from a news outlet that he was getting married. Did you two even bother to think about him at all?"

"Scott and I were very happy and we were just getting to know each other and all of a sudden, just because I happened to introduce him to you, we had to start planning a wedding? That was just too much dad and it's actually pretty funny. Just so you know dad, I can handle both my professional life and my personal life very well and I can assure you, there won't be any problems with both," she told her father confidently.

Marcos exhaled slowly before letting down the wine glass in his hands.

"You said it yourself my dear. You were just getting to know each other and only heaven knows how long that was going to take since you kids of nowadays take years in simply getting to know each other. Another thing is, this is your first relationship Olivia and it is quite scary to me that you're only just having your first relationship,"

"What exactly is so scary about being a first timer in a relationship dad? What makes you think so? Would you have preferred that I was one of those easy girls that just any guy could have gotten with? Is that what you're saying dad?" Olivia questioned snappily.

"Relax Olivia. Just relax and listen to me," her father quickly told her before she ended up getting too upset and throwing a fit.

She inhaled and exhaled deeply before sitting back down on the sofa.

"Okay papa, I'm very relaxed now. Now tell me, what exactly is so scary?" she questioned insistently.

"Have you seen yourself working with Olivia? You are like an entirely different person. You are so invested in it that you don't even bother think about yourself and work is literally the only thing you know and this is why the fact that this is your first relationship scares me my dear. You literally don't know how to treat people warmly. The entire world thinks you're arrogant and ill mannered Olivia and frankly, they're not wrong about you. Now my fear is that your attitude will end up pushing the people that genuinely love you away from you and that includes the man you're about to marry? Your cluelessness about relationships will only make you make several mistakes and if anything happens now, it could end up shattering you for a very long time,"

"Now, I'm not saying it's a bad thing to have a strong personality but I feel like you really need to tone down your arrogance at this point in your life. I know, I shouldn't have forced you into getting married this quickly but if you love him and he loves you just like you both claim, then why bother waiting any longer? You're not exactly getting younger my girl," Marcos said, wearing a worried look on his face.

"Oh come on father. There are many women out there who don't get married till they are in their forties and there are many of them who don't get married at all. Marriage is not a necessity," she countered.

"You are not another woman, Olivia. I don't want us arguing over this anymore sweetie and that is why I'm telling you that all I did was for your own good and some day, you'll understand this and you'll thank me for it," he assured her confidently and Olivia simply rolled her eyes.

"Let's see about that dad," she drawled.

"Is this really why you came here?" she asked.

"Well, I just felt we needed to talk about this and get it out of the way as soon as possible. I also wanted to spend some time with but I think it's time for me to leave now. Have a goodnight sweetheart," Marcos replied, getting up and placing a quick kiss on her forehead.

"Goodnight papa," she told him before watching his retreating figure head out of her living room.
