Nathaniel had his car tucked in a corner nearby, so as they heard the bang again, they hurried their steps, their hands intertwined without either noticing.
On reaching the shadowed vehicle, Nathaniel took out his keys from his pockets, his breath still struggling to stay still. After turning the key into the hole, he made to use his other hand to open the door, but he ended up dragging Chloe to his side.
“S-sorry.” Eyes darting here and there, she untangled her hand and took steps towards the passenger side. Nathaniel, whose mind was chaotically trying to figure out the sounds they were hearing, could not help but smile as he found the way Chloe apologised cute.
The door on the other side slamming shut brought him out of that thought. After he entered and kicked the car to life, they were soon on their way to the house.
