Chapter 34

I’m still crying when Derek shows up. When he notices me, he puts the food down and nearly runs to me.

"What did you say to her, Bernie?"

"I told her some necessary things. If she wants to tell you, she can. It is not my place. Before I go, I need to let you know that you will need to stay here for a couple of days. After that, I have arranged a meeting for you with Meril, but Derek will have to go with you."

I don’t say anything and, after a few seconds, he walks out the door. Derek moves the food to the bedside table before he climbing in bed with me. I can feel him looking at me, waiting, but I can’t. I’m not ready just yet. He slowly reaches over and pulls me to him. It feels good; I need a shoulder to cry on so I allow him to hold me.

He sighs, softly, before he finally gets the courage to ask. "What happened, honey? Do you want to talk about it?"
