Trouble Follows

As we make our way further and further out of the city, it grows darker and darker. The silence in the car is downright unnerving. I close my eyes and lean my head back in silence, keeping my focus on the tracking spell.

Suddenly, Vance mutters a soft curse and says, "We have company." My eyes open and I sit up. I turn and look back to see a large SUV following behind us. I narrow my eyes as I ask, "They've been following us?"

Vance sighs and says, "Yes, judging by their heartbeats, I'd say they were all human. That means we have Witch Hunters on our ass." Aston curses and says, "It's the damn tracking spell! I knew they would come running."

I purse my lips and say, "It's fine. There's only one of them, I can handle them without a problem." As soon as I say this, two more SUVs show up behind the first one. My jaw slacks as my face drops. Aston curses again and pulls out a handgun, checking to make sure it's loaded.

I mutter, "Just how many are there? It wasn't this bad the last time I came to the human world. They're multiplying like a damn plague..." Vance snorts in laughter as he says, "I think they're trying to cut us off."

I sigh in irritation as I say, "Stop the car. I don't feel like dying from a car accident." Vance gives me a look of confusion in the mirror as Aston yells, "Absolutely not! If we stop, they'll surround us!" I look over at Aston with a look of disappointment on my face and say, "They already have. They will do everything in their power to stop this car. I personally want to stay in one piece. Trust me, stop the car."

Vance sighs long and hard as he says, "Just to be clear, if you die, it's on you." I roll my eyes as the car comes to a stop on the empty road. It was probably around three in the morning, so it was dead.

The SUVs all come to a stop, fanning out behind us. I glance at Vance and say, "Stay in the car." I go to open the door but pause. I turn and look at Aston and say, "You too. Both of you stay in the car." I open the door and step out in a lazy manner.

I shut the door on Aston and use my magic to lock the doors. I step behind the car and face the three SUVs with their bright lights nearly blinding me. I come to a stop and wait, staring at them with annoyance.

A few moments later and all the SUV doors open. Several hunters step out in full uniform. I frown at them as some even pull their guns and point them at me. A woman with platinum blonde hair leads the group as they step closer but still keep a "safe" distance.

I look at the fifteen to twenty people and ask, "What is this? Men in black? What's with the black and white suits?" The woman in front glares at me as she says, "You're brave to face us. This must be your first time here in the human world. Let us give you a proper welcome, witch."

I sigh and say, "I'm really starting to dislike blonde females. There seems to be a trend with you all. Look, I'm going to be real honest with you all. I'm busy and in a hurry. If I have to deal with you all, it's going to put a dent in my plan so if you all pack up and leave now, you all get to live."

A bunch of them snicker and snort in laughter, not taking me or my words seriously. They all lift their guns, aiming at me with bloodlust burning in their eyes. I crack my neck as I mutter, "Of course not, why make things easy?"

Aston shatters the window on Vance's car and crawls out of it like a seasoned pro. He raises his gun, pointing at them as he yells at me, "Get down!" As soon as I feel the shift in the air, I lift my hand. The blonde woman in the front lifts a large witch's stone but the thing turns into sand the instant my magic is released.

A large circler golden shield appears before us, effectively blocking all the bullets with ease. When I see the look of shock and fear on their faces, I give them a dark smile full of dark promises. They unload all their bullets and as soon as they run out, I drop the shield and say, "I gave you a chance, I guess you've all chosen death."

They all stumble back, trying to retreat as the woman with blonde hair mutters, "Impossible... you didn't even chant!" I roll my eyes as I say, "Surprise? I don't need to." My eyes faintly glow as several blades of my golden magic start materializing behind me in the air.

Someone yells, "Run!" At the same time, I release the blades. They fly through the air like beams of light, hitting their targets with ease. Yells and screams of pain can be heard as they all scramble. Some drop dead instantly while others are severely injured.

Aston yells out, "THEY HAVE A GRENADE LAUNCHER!!" My eyebrows shoot up to my hairline as I turn and lock eyes with a man with a damn grenade launcher sitting on his shoulder! Blood trickles from his mouth but the look in his eyes tell me he's not going down without taking me down with him.... or at least trying to.

It happens so fast; I struggle to stop it. If I just throw up a shield, it will create a large explosion! The local authorities will be notified, and they will get involved. It's the last damn thing I need! I lift my hand, quickly summoning my magic.

My eyes blaze with golden light as my golden magic quickly slithers around my arm before shooting towards the missile! I grit my teeth as I focus. Aston jumps in front of me, spreading his arms as if a human shield would actually block the damn thing.

As soon as my magic collides with it, it turns into water! The water comes flying at us but thanks to Aston's act of heroism, it all hits him head-on. The water hits him instantly, but I ignore him as I turn on the guy who shot the damn thing and hit him again. This time he dies.

I look around, searching for any survivors but when I don't find any, turn back to look at Aston. He was still coughing and gasping for air. He was alive and well, but the sight was still pitiful. He looked like a drowned pup. When I look back to the car, I find Vance leaning against it, smoking and enjoying the show.

He gives me an amused smile as he says, "You owe me a window." I glare at him before turning back to the dead witch hunters. I can't leave them like this... As soon as the humans wake up, they'll find this, and then it'll be all over the news.

Irritation eats away at me as I squat down and place my hand on the ground. I push my magic into it, turning it into liquid. The bodies and the vehicles all start sinking into the ground and as soon as they're deep enough, I release my magic and the ground hardens again.

Sweat beads my hair line but I ignore the exhaustion pulling at me as I turn and say, "Let's go."
