57 Eon Street.
A black Dodge was parked by the roadside.
Luke sat in the passenger seat, looking at a gray wooden house in the distance. He said to Marcus and Jenny, "According to the information Harry received, Lindsay is staying at her friend Logan Sarm's place.
Given the situation at Ome Hospital, Lindsay likely has an accomplice, and Logan Sarm is also a suspect.
Be cautious when we make our move."
Marcus smiled, "Without Harry, it would have been tough to find Lindsay. Can I consider this an indirect achievement?"
Luke ignored him and continued assigning tasks, "Jenny and I will handle the front door.
Marcus, you take the patrol officers and keep an eye on the back door. Any issues?"
Marcus shrugged, "No, Detective Luke."
A few minutes later, the support patrol officers arrived.
Luke and his team entered Logan's yard and split up to act.
Luke didn't have a good impression of Logan. Not only did this guy try to steal police cars, but he also betrayed his partner.
He was definitely scum.
Once everyone was ready, Jenny walked to the door and knocked, "Knock, knock…"
No response.
"Knock, knock…" Jenny knocked again.
Still no response.
Jenny shouted, "Sir, I'm with the Immigration Bureau. We received reports that you've been harboring illegal immigrants. Please open the door."
After a while, footsteps were heard, and the door opened.
A haggard-looking white woman stood at the door, "You've got the wrong person. I'm a U.S. citizen, not an illegal immigrant…"
Before she could finish, she noticed Luke out of the corner of her eye. She froze, took a few steps back, and demanded, "What are you doing here?"
"Lindsay, I need to talk to you."
"Did David send you? I don't want to talk to you. I don't want to be involved with him right now, so please leave." Lindsay said and quickly shut the door.
Luke stopped the door with his hand, "Where's Lawren?"
"Who's Lawren? I don't know what you're talking about."
"I saw you on the hospital surveillance footage—nurse's uniform, wheelchair. Need I say more?" Luke didn't arrest her immediately; he still didn't have enough evidence to prove the nurse was Lindsay.
Lindsay stammered, "I… I don't know what you're talking about."
Luke continued, "You were wearing a mask at the time, so I might not have recognized you. But do you think David wouldn't recognize you? The police are onto you; you can't run away."
Lindsay tested, "Aren't you from the Robbery and Homicide Division? Why are you involved in this?"
Seeing her tone soften, Luke pressed on, "Lawren is involved in a major case. I hope you take it seriously; this isn't a small matter.
Besides, kidnapping is a serious crime, and if Lawren dies, it'll be a first-degree murder charge."
"What?" Lindsay thought she misheard and looked shocked, "I just helped him get out of the hospital. Strictly speaking, it doesn't even count as a crime."
Luke countered, "Do you admit that you kidnapped Lawren last night?"
"I'll say it again, I didn't kidnap anyone. I just helped him out of the hospital. He even thanked me when we parted."
Luke confirmed, "Was Lawren conscious at the time?"
"Of course, he got into the wheelchair by himself. He was just a bit inconvenient to move around. I never acted against his will; it wasn't kidnapping."
"Where is Lawren now?"
"I don't know. After leaving Ome Hospital, he got out in a relatively remote area, and we haven't seen each other since."
"Who instructed you to do this?"
"Uh…" Lindsay glanced nervously, hesitating.
"Stop! LAPD!"
Then Marcus's voice was heard, "Someone jumped out of the window on the east side."
"Keep an eye on her." Luke said and ran after the sound of the gunfire.
He reached the east side of the house and saw a white man climbing over the fence and running away, who looked like Logan.
Marcus, along with a patrol officer, chased after him, while another patrol officer presumably stayed at the back door.
Luke also followed.
"Stop! You can't escape." Marcus shouted as he ran.
"Bang!" A gunshot rang out in response.
"Fuck!" Luke swore, instinctively looking for cover and hiding behind a metal trash can.
Then he remembered he had an Evasion Card, which added an extra layer of protection.
Luke's courage grew, and he peeked out.
He saw Logan running again.
"Marcus, cover me." Luke took a deep breath and chased after him.
Logan seemed to notice someone behind him and turned to shoot again, "Bang!"
"Bang!"
Logan fired two shots, as if warning his pursuers.
Luke was waiting for this moment. As soon as Logan fired, he emptied his magazine in response.
"Bang, bang…"
Luke fired wildly at Logan.
Marcus and the patrol officer also caught up and fired at Logan's direction.
"Bang…"
The gunshots echoed loudly, leaving a ringing in their ears.
"Ah!"
A scream followed as Logan's right arm was hit, and his handgun fell to the ground.
The three of them quickly rushed forward and captured Logan.
Luke and his team had been firing indiscriminately, not knowing who had injured Logan.
Marcus handcuffed Logan, and the patrol officer called 911 for an ambulance.
Luke sighed with relief, his palms sweating. This was the first time he had experienced a gunfight since crossing over.
As a criminal police officer back in his home country, Luke had used his weapon before, but there were strict regulations and a more cautious approach.
This was his first time emptying an entire magazine in one go.
Refreshing.
"Ah…" Logan continued to groan in pain.
Marcus was in charge of keeping an eye on him, while Luke went to join Jenny.
After the gunshots, more patrol officers arrived for support.
Jenny had been keeping an eye on Lindsay.
"Jenny, search the house. We haven't found Lawren's whereabouts yet," Luke said, and then handcuffed Lindsay.
Lindsay protested, "I've already told you everything I know. Why are you treating me like this?"
Luke asked, "Did you hear the gunshots?"
"Yeah."
"And what's your relationship with Logan?"
"Friends."
"Did he participate in the kidnapping of Lawren?"
"I've said it wasn't kidnapping. I just helped him out of the hospital."
"Answer my question. Did Logan participate?"
"Yeah."
Luke countered, "If, as you say, it wasn't kidnapping, then your crime isn't severe and might not even lead to imprisonment.
Why did Logan shoot at the police? That's a serious crime.
Explain."
Lindsay's mouth opened slightly, "I don't know."
"I'll ask again, who instructed you to take Lawren away?"
"I really don't know. It was Logan who contacted me; I was just helping out."
"Did Logan go to the hospital that night?"
"Yes."
"What did he do?"
"He fired a warning shot to divert the patrol officers. I was responsible for getting Lawren out of the hospital, that's all. We didn't commit any crime."
"Logan didn't just fire a warning shot; he'll definitely be going to jail. Do you want to go to jail with him, or assist the police in the investigation to potentially reduce your sentence? Think it over." Luke pushed Lindsay into the police car.
Jenny holstered her gun and walked over, "I searched the house but didn't find any trace of Lawren."
Luke sighed, "No one is easy to deal with."
