Vanessa
I look from Brent to Vanessa and back again with a deer in headlights look. How could she say something like that? She must know how much Brent wants a child.
Slowly, I shake my head, still staring at Brent.
His eyes widen. I can see hopes and dreams filling them.
There's nothing I want more than to give Brent what he desires.
Brent squints at me.
I keep shaking my head.
"Often," Uma interrupts, "a pregnant woman is the last to know."
Brent glances from Uma to Brent, scooting his chair back. "Excuse us if we don't finish dessert."
"You can't take a pregnancy test until the morning," Uma tells him. Frustration enters her voice as she lowers it, saying, "Lord knows you had me up during the crack of dawn peeing on every stick."
"You were pregnant?" Rodney asks, cocking his head to get a better look at Uma. "You didn't tell me that."
