Chapter 38: Thinking Silently

Vanessa

I have a doctor's appointment shortly after two in the afternoon today. It's a day after I took the pregnancy tests. Brent wants confirmation I'm pregnant. But, first, I'm going back to college.

A small college outside Los Angeles invited me to an information session a while back. The advisor wants me to think about some different majors other than nursing.

Honestly, I want to agree. Caring for my grandparents, even if it's not as much as most family members do, has changed my mind about the nursing profession.

I walk to the counter where a student sits.

Suddenly, I'm envious. I'd love to be her right now.

"May I help you?" She smiles.

My phone rings.

I don't recognize the number. Suddenly, I'm sick. My body tenses as I step away from the counter. Quickly, I glance at the woman and tell her, "I'll be right back."

She nods, smiling.

"Hello?"

"Vanessa? Is this Vanessa?"

I frown. "Uma?"
