Chapter Twelve

The day ticked day with painful slowness. Mad worse with the tedious chores Demetrius was assigned. Peeling fruit and vegetables, sweeping and scrubbing a floor that wouldn't be cleaned and answering the beck and call of whoever rang the damned bell.

His only relief was that Kayana didn't ring again. Happy enough to have unnerved him until the evening, another job he was dreading.

Adi remained mostly silent, offering a snide comment when his head changed. They fell on deaf ears. If anything, Demetrius was adaptable and he swiftly became used to it.

Finally, he was allowed a break and gratefully swallowed the water offered and greedily accepted the doorstep slice of bread, accompanied by the few grapes or similar fruit, left over from the night prior and heading for the swine if not consumed.
