At the time of publication, Shirley still remembered how the Fog City Times had almost daily book reviews, fundamentally split into two camps. One side regarded Mary's novel ending as excessively cruel and misaligned with mainstream values. Furthermore, they argued that if an organization called the Tribunal were to act on such values, it too would meet its destruction.

The other side simply sneered at this, praising Mary for interpreting the concept of humans and the universe from a brand-new perspective, after all, "strangers are naturally suspicious". People might look similar on the same planet, which is fine, but why bother being so courteous with alien races that not only look different but also have entirely different bodies?
