Chapter 14: Stacking the Deck

Tuesday, May 8th, 8:33 AM

Mako walked out onto the casino floor after descending the balcony stairs. He pretended to wander like a lost guest, and the staff members nearby didn't seem to mind. All the while, he kept Nikolai in his peripheral vision, studying his rigid movements. Mako detected a bit of paranoia in the young man similar to Elise's and assumed the same fear that Dmitri ruled with shadowed him like a black cloud.

Grazing the tops of the poker tables with his fingers, Mako approached Nikolai's position, stopped for a moment to take a gander out of the large window where the sun shined, and let loose a deep exhale. Nikolai paid no attention to him, or, at least, that's what it seemed like. Mako knew his presence was known; the sudden side-glance from the dealer gave him confidence.

He took a seat at one of the nearby tables and tapped his fingers while looking away from Nikolai. The flicking of cards between the man's fingers filled his ears.
