Chapter 20: Eavesdropping

Mako released Elise's hand after reaching the docks where the cruise remained anchored. Hours stood between him and the departure time, but safely escorting Elise to the ship before any of Dmitri's men spotted her became his primary concern. At the ramp, he turned to her and planted his feet.

"You better board," Mako said. "It doesn't look like anyone is around to notice."

"Are you not going to board as well?" Elise asked.

He glanced to his right toward the town for a moment.

"Not just yet, I don't think. It's been a while since I've been able to mingle in a crowd; I strangely miss the sensation."

Elise cast a disappointed look his way, and it pained him slightly.

"I know you don't want to separate just yet, and neither do I," Mako said. "But the more we are together in public, the greater the risk becomes. Go on ahead of me. I'll be back on the boat later."

"Where can I find you once you're back?"
