"No, I'm not leaving, not until you save her. Not until I know that she's okay." I yelled feeling helpless as I looked at the woman that I love laying lifeless on a gurney flat lining.
My brain was still processing how something like this is happening. What kind of maniac walks into a hospital and starts shooting doctors? How did a normal day turn into the worst day of my life.
"I can't get control of this artery." Dr. Altman sighed in frustration working quickly in attempt to save our patient.
"He's crashing." Dr. Hunt said looking over at the heart monitor as the machines began beeping signaling that the patients heart was stopping.
"I need more light and another clamp." Altman says occupied with our patient as Derek rushes in.
"How's it going in here?" He asks.
"Touch and go." Owen responds.
"Avery, you got a second?" He asks looking over at me. I nod my head before walking over to him to see what he needed.
"Has anybody checked their pager?" He asks me.
"No, we've been to busy." I shake my head wondering what was so important.
'There's a shooter in the hospital." He says automatically making my heart drop. A thousand thoughts ran through my mind. Concerns for not only my own safety, but also Liliana's. My first instinct was to sprint away from the O.R. to find her, but I knew that I couldn't. "I don't want you to say a word. When the patient is stable I want you to tell Hunt and Altman that nobody goes out of here until they are told. Can u handle this?" He asks.
"Yes sir." I nod.
"Alright." He says before walking out.
"What did Shepherd want?" Hunt asks me as I return to assist with the surgery. "Dr. Avery." He calls again snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Nothing, just wanted to know how long we'll be. He needs the OR soon." I lied just trying to follow Shepherd's orders.
"Okay, get in here and suction around where Dr. Altman's working." Hunt instructs me.
I attempt to begin suctioning, but my hands were extremely shaky from nervousness, fear, worry. Every emotion that you could feel knowing that you're in a hospital with an armed shooter.
"Shaky hands Dr. Avery. You won't make it as a surgeon if you can't keep your hands still." Hunt said disapprovingly clearly judging my poor suctioning skills at the moment.
"Yes sir." I say trying to focus back on the surgery, even though I couldn't. In my mind all I could think about is Lily and rather or not she's safe. If she's found a place to hide, if she's alone.
"Okay, he's ready for transport." Dr. Altman says after we've finished the surgery.
"Okay, Jackson get him up to ICU start warming him up." Hunt begins to say before I interrupt him.
"I can't sir." I say snatching my surgical mask off. "We can't leave here, that's what Shepherd told me. There's a shooter in the hospital we're supposed to stay here."
"There's a what?" He frowns.
"Shepherd said..."
"This patient is hypothermic. I need to get him to ICU and start warming him up, and you just thought to mention this now." Hunt frowns.
"But Shepherd said..." I tried to explain.
"You already told me what Shepherd said." Hunt says sternly. "I'll take him up myself, everyone else stay here." He instructs.
"I'm coming." Teddy says following Owen against his wishes. I sit on the hard floor knowing I'll be stuck here to deal with my thoughts and worry for awhile since we are on lockdown.
After some time has passed, I hear voices outside of the O.R. I recognize one voice being Cristina's. I rush to open the door hoping that Lily is out there with her, but she's not. It's just her and April. They both scream and duck to the floor, startled my sudden presence. Fearing that the shooter has found them, but they release a sigh of relief when they see that it's just me.
"You're not supposed to be walking around." I say sternly. "Is that your blood? Are you okay?" I frowned seeing blood on Cristina's scrubs as I approached them.
"I'm fine. Go get Altman or Hunt." Cristina instructs.
"They left." I frowned.
"Someone just shot Derek." She said shocking me. Derek was just entering our O.R. telling me that there was an active shooter roaming the hospital and now he was shot himself. "He has a gsw to the chest and he needs surgery right now. Tell me there's an attending on this floor."
She stares at me realizing there's not an attending near. We both new that would mean that she would have to operate. I sent April to get the scrub nurses and an anesthesiologist in the O.R. behind us before walking off with Cristina to go get Derek.
"Was Lily with him? Have you seen her?" I asked. She was almost always by Derek's side and I was just hoping that she hadn't been caught in the cross fire.
"No, I haven't seen her." She shakes her head giving me no sense of relief, because I still had no idea where Lily was. "Hey don't freak out I'm sure she's fine. She's probably hiding out in a on call room or something."
"I hope so." I sighed. We get to Derek and rush him to the O.R. I began prepping him for surgery while Cristina is talking to Meredith and April. A short while later she enters the O.R. and we begin to operate. She's nervous, just like everyone else is in the room. We're all scared out of our minds, just hoping for this nightmare to end. I hear the door open. I assumed that it was Meredith coming in for a update on Derek, but it's not. It's the shooter.
"Stop operating." He demands pointing the gun at Cristina, but she continues to operate only angering him and causing him to press the gun to her head. Owen instantly rushed in when seeing what's going on and that Cristina's in danger.
"Let him lay there and die." The shooter demands.
"Jackson, clamp the hilum so I can see." Cristina says with tears of fear now streaming down her face. I had never seen Cristina look so vulnerable, so scared but having a gun pressed to your head can make even the strongest person weak.
"Don't you dare." The man says now pointing his gun at me.
Owen moves distracting him enough for me to grab the clamp, before he turns his attention back to Cristina.
"I came here for justice. An eye for an eye. He killed my wife. The only person I want in this room is Shepherd." He says before Meredith rushes in.
"Shoot me." She says making all of us to turn our attention to her. Was she going crazy? Telling a gunman to shoot her after he had already shot God knows how many people. "Derek told me what happened. Dr. Garcia pulled the plug she's one of my best friends, Dr. Shepherd the Chief I'm his wife, and Dr. Webber he was your wife's doctor, I'm the closest thing he has to a daughter so if you want to hurt them shoot me." She pleads making him point his gun at her.
"Wait she's pregnant! You wouldn't shoot a woman that's pregnant?" Cristina says distracting the shooter before Owen jumps to snatch gun, but instead ends up shot. I unplugged the monitors from Derek while all of this was happening to make the monitor flat line so that the shooter would think that Derek is dead.
