Chapter Ten

Peggy was walking down the hallway with Lexie talking about Alex and her fight, "I just don't understand why you're so pissed at him?"

"I thought you of all people would understand why I'm upset," Lexie scoffs at her.

She raises an eyebrow confused, "Your dad showed up screaming about wanting to see Dr Grey, and when Alex went to get you, you said to leave you alone. So his only choice was to go get Meredith or else he would have called the cops on him."

"Well maybe he should have called the cops," Lexie says speeding up just as Alex walks over to them.

"Hey," He says smiling at Peggy.

Lexie scoffs, "We're late for Sloan's meeting."

He sighs, "Yeah, so am I."

"Also, I'm not speaking to you." She walks off making him scoff but he grabs Peggy's arm and pulls her into an office. He shoves her against the wall slamming his lips into hers, as their lips moved together he begins to smile into the kiss.

"Hey! We're late for Sloan!" Meredith tells them as she walks past the room, sighs pulling away before walking out the room. They make their way out of the room, and follow her to the patient room.

They walk through the crowd of people and to the front where they find Sloan standing next to a redheaded patient. "Okay, ladies and gentlemen, this is Nick Hanscomb."

Nick smiles at them all, "Hi."

"Nick was lucky enough to have me remove a large carotid body tumour from his neck." He moves the gauze letting them see the large scar on his neck, "The fact that I was able to get clean boundaries is pretty darn impressive, even for me."

Alex nods, "Congratulations."

Sloan looks at him annoyed, "Don't interrupt. Now despite the fact that it was a wildly successful surgery, we had to dissect out deep lymph nodes in his neck. There is now only a delicate flap of skin between his carotid artery and the outside world. That said, what am I worried about?" He asks the group.

Christina immediately jumps in, "I would think given the friability of the skin, that there's a great possibility that the, um, the artery could blow?"

The plastic surgeon nods pointing at her, "Right."

The patient looks over and notices the look on Lexie's face and reassures her, "Oh, don't worry. I've ... I've heard this before."

"If that happens, whoever's in the room, I don't care if it's a doctor, a nurse, an orderly, your job is to stop the bleeding then page me, in that order. Are we clear?" Everyone nods their heads, "Any questions?"

Nick sucks his teeth, "They look scared."

"They're medical professionals, Nick. A healthy level of fear is encouraged." He nods at the man.

Nick looks over and smiles at them but Peggy notices his eyes travel to Lexie, "Okay, then, uh, if I do die, it will have been lovely meeting you all."

Glancing over she sees Lexie smile back making her attempt to hide hers, "See? The patient is confident. You should be confident. That's it."

After the meeting with Sloan, Peggy stood in the hallway talking with the chief when his pager goes off. Looking down at it he stares in shock, "Come on Dr Gallagher!" He starts rushing down the hallway as she follows, "Two ambulances just crashed in front of the hospital."

Getting down there he walks over to Dr Bailey, "Dr Gallagher head outside to stay with Ray."

She nods heading outside and rushing over to Meredith, "Thank god! Peggy sit here and help me keep them awake. The firefighters just showed up, have you seen the chief?"

"Yeah, he's in the ER talking to Bailey," She informs the resident crouching down to look at the two men. "Can you both still feel your legs?"

Ray nods his head, "Yeah but I don't think Stan can feel his."

Just then the Webber runs outside and crouches next to the two girls, "How's it going in there, fellas?"

Stan looks over at them with staggered breaths, "I think, uh, I think that they better get us out of here."

"Yeah. If we're putting it to a vote, I think we better get out of here, fast." Ray looks over at them as he speaks through gritted teeth.

Webber sighs, "I'm afraid "keep still", is the best we can do for now. Don't want to make anything worse. We'll get you some pain meds as soon as possible."

The EMT looks over at Peggy, "Ma'am?"

She gives him a sad smile, "My names Peggy."

He nods, "Peggy, I think my legs are broken, can you check?"

She looks over and shakes her head, " I'm sorry but I  can't see your legs."

"How come?" He asks her confused as he tries to speak throw shallow breaths.

She sighs, "Your body's trapped in the door." Peggy looks over sharing a look with Meredith and the chief. "Can you not feel that?"
