As Helena arrived to the hospital in the morning, she put her stuff on her new cubby, at the resident's lounge. Finding a list of her interns on it, she rushed to memorize the names she knew she'd be calling frequently that year. Dancing throwing the crowds that were forming in the hallways, she mumbled the new names under her breath, a small smile on her face.
Smiling, she pulled her hair back as she arrived to the nurses station outside the intern's locker room. She could see some motion inside, already somewhat missing the excitement of her first day. If there was one thing she liked about interns, was their ever present fascination and excitement.
As she waited, charting, she felt a group approach her, turning to find a nervous looking group of three. "Ok, welcome to Seattle Grace Hospital." She gave them a small smile, preparing to launch onto a speech similar to her own resident's. "I have five rules, memorize them. First rule, don't bother sucking up. I don't know you, which means I don't trust you. As interns, you will make mistakes. It's up to me to teach you how to reduce them." The interns watched her with awe, seemingly absorbing her every word. A tall and tan girl took some notes.
The resident waved towards some material on the counter. "Those are trauma protocols, phone lists and pagers." The interns hurried to grab them, Helena still speaking. "Keep the the binder in your locker just in case, but I expect you to know them by heart by your next shift."
Helena started walking down the hall with a smile, as she motioned for her interns to follow her. "That leads me to rule number two. The nurses will page you. You answer every pager at a . Not a walk or jog, a run. People's lives are at stake here. Which leads me to rule number three: you respect the nurses, you to the nurses. You may think you know more than them, you . They have more experience than all of you combined."
Hearing her interns scurry behind her, she kept going. "Your shift started..." Sh glanced at her watch. "Three minutes ago and lasts a total of forty eight hours. You are interns: grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders and give it your all, all of the time. It sucks, but we've all been there, it's how you learn."
As she opened a door, her interns walked inside to look at the room. "On call rooms. Attending's hog them, so you sleep when you can, where you can. So, rule number four: if I'm sleeping, you avoid waking me up. If you absolutely have to, don't be dumb, better to get yelled at, than to have killed a patient, then I'll just have to yell more. In any other circumstance, you ask me your questions. Better to ask stupid questions than to make stupid mistakes."
The girl stopped for a moment, letting out a breath and looking with pride to her new interns.
As the resident had hoped, one of them cautiously raised his hand, his voice nervous. "Hum... you said five rules? That was only four..."
The girl's pager went off and she looked down at it, with a smile. "Rule number five, when I move, you move."
Helena walked down the hallway ready to answer her page, her interns behind her. , she thought.
——
"I hate them." Cristina complained, the former interns, now first year residents, sitting in the tunnels. Helena laid on a bed, her legs over Meredith's.
"You don't hate them, you hate you." Meredith's answered.
"I like mine. They seem... dedicated." Helena spoke up, a slight smile in her face.
"That was awful, I feel like a fraud." Izzie sighed.
"I rocked it. I think I'm the new Nazi." Alex smirked.
"Oh, you are not the new Nazi." The Asian woman laughed.
George approached them, his lab coat in his hand. "Meredith, I need to talk to you."
"Oh, Georgie! Is good to see you." She got up in a jump, hugging her friend "How are you? How was your vacation?"
Helena had gone to Portugal with her family for her short vacation, using the time to catch up with her family back home, that she didn't always get to see. However, that meant she didn't spend much time with her friends. Of course, she had been ruthlessly texting Cristina and Meredith, to make sure the first was ok, after being left at the altar by Burke.
That meant, she hadn't seen Mark since their kiss, and even though she'd had enough time to think about what she wanted, she was nervous to hear the man's thoughts.
"It was... fine." George answered, still seemingly distant, as Helena sat back down, biting the inside of her cheek.
"Good, because mine were... I didn't do much. Hung out alone for seventeen days. Which is the last time o saw you." Izzie started mumbling. "The day of Cristina's wedding which was... well. And Lena went to Portugal with her family, and then Mer and Cristina went on Cristina's honeymoon without me."
"Girl on girl honeymoon." Alex laughed mischievously.
"Oh, . Remember not to tell you if I ever get a girlfriend." Helena playfully shoved him.
"And then Alex went to se Ava without me." Izzie rolled her eyes.
Ava aka Rebecca aka Jane Doe was Alex's patient from the ferry accident, the two having become close.
"I did not go to see Ava. Her name is Rebecca and I didn't go see her, I just... drove in that direction."
"Why is everyone so tingly and hurt? I mean, I'm the one who was left at the altar." Cristina said, making Helena and Meredith share a look. "I'm fine, by the way. I had a honeymoon in Hawaii and I... snorkeled."
"Meredith, I really need to talk to you." George repeated, just as a group of interns opened the door to the tunnels.
Seeing George and the residents talking, they shared a look before approaching them, in hopes of getting to talk.
