Chapter 8: The Blood

Ying didn't know what he should do. Ying didn't know if he should step in, or stay back. He felt frozen, frozen in time. What turned from Chan geeking over a vampling, to Jingfei clutching onto Yang for dear life. In a matter of seconds. "I…..didn't….. Kill you.." Jingfei was saying things that didn't happen. Saying things that could never happen.

Chan wouldn't let a vampire anywhere close to Yang if he thought they were dangerous. So for Jingfei to be hugging Yang in front of Chan, it's obvious that Chan doesn't think Jingfei is dangerous. Even with Jingfei's mumblings. Yang looked up at Ying with worried eyes. This was his vampling. His responsibility. Not Wei's, and not Yang's. Ying stepped up, reaching for Jingfei's hand. "Let's go upstairs," Ying whispered softly, as if it was only them two in the room.

Jingfei quickly let go of Yang, instantly turning to Ying. His eyes were quick and stressed, weary and scared. Was he scared of Ying? Should he be? Ying didn't do anything wrong, did he? He glanced around the room before quickly looking down. His dark brown hair covered his face as he did so. Ying looked up at Wei, nodding softly, before guiding Jingfei to the steps.

With each stride, guilt only plagued Ying's heart more. Most vamplings die before a week. Usually, because they get on hunters' radars too quickly. They kill people, use their new abilities to kill, rob, get revenge. However, Ying knew that Jingfei wasn't one of those people. He wouldn't take advantage of the fact that he was a vampire.

But there was another group of vamplings. It's rare, but if you bite the right person, it's bound to happen. Someone, a vampling, who's happy as a human. Smiles and laughs are fun. So when they find out they need blood, they need to hurt other people to survive, they can't do it. They can't hurt someone. They won't do it. Can't stomach the fact. They would rather starve or kill themselves.

So they do.

Ying opened the door to a small room. Both Chan, Yang, Ying, and Wei have their own rooms at the house. Plus, there was an extra room. Ying walked inside, Jingfei following him with light footsteps. The vampire shut the door behind him, gesturing to a bed. "This is your room, you can sit down. You won't stay here often, but when you do, you'll have a place." Ying informed me.

A soft glisten showed from Jingfei's jewel as he sat down, just barely bright enough for Ying to notice. He walked over, sitting beside the vampling on the bed. He sighed softly. "Jingfei, why did you say you killed Yang?" Ying asked. He didn't look at Jingfei. And Jingfei didn't look at him. The room was silent, before Jingfei's soft voice greeted it.

"I thought I did. I saw blood everywhere. And.. the boy was there. He was dead, Ying. I killed him, I was the only one there." "Jingfei. You didn't see that. There was no way Yang was dead, Jingfei. You didn't kill him. I was there, Wei and Chan. You would have to get through all of us to kill Yang." Ying responded.

"Maybe… maybe you're right. But he was dead. I saw him dead-" "Jingfei." Ying held Jingfei's hand tightly. He shook his head. "You were just seeing things, okay? Why would you think you would hurt Yang? What makes you think that?" Ying asked. He continued to hold Jingfei's hand, even though the other was looking away.

"I almost killed someone earlier. I would have killed them in broad daylight. It's in front of people. I almost did that. But Wei and you stopped me. But- but if you two weren't there, what would I have done?" Jingfei was still on this. Ying thought he and Wei had explained to him that it wasn't his fault. "Jingfei, but we were. We knew that would happen, that's why we stayed there. We wanted to show you what could happen." Was Jingfei scared he would do it again?

"Are you hungry? Is that why you-" Jingfei shook his head. "No, no. I just- I don't want to hurt someone. I can't. I- when I saw Yang, he smelled like food. To me- he smelled like cinnamon rolls. Like something, a human would eat. I thought about eating him, Ying. I thought about killing that boy right there, right in front of all of you. I can't- I can't imagine myself hurting anyone. But now…. Now that's the one thing whispering in my ear.

"I wish it would just shut up. Just… just leave me alone." Jingfei S's voice turned softer as he talked, airier as tears welled up in his eyes. He stared right at Ying. Directly act him. Ying sighed, gripping Jingfei's hand just as tightly as Jingfei had done before. Just to let him know he was there. Just then, Ying realized something. Jingfei wasn't scared of Ying, Chan, or Yang.

He was scared of himself.
