Chapter 28: The Burned

Yang was silent for a moment, and Jingfei couldn't tell what was going through the others' minds. Was it bad, or maybe good, Jingfei didn't know. He couldn't tell by Yang's face, nor could he tell by his body movements. Jingfei stayed silent as well, looking out into the street As the two walked down the darkened path, a sound was heard from afar. It wasn't a scream or yell, nor was it a shreik of murder.

Yang couldn't hear it, Jingfei could tell. It was scraping, of something. Not of nails, nor of footsteps. In the darkened sidewalk, only lit by the hazy streetlights, Jingfei looked around for the culprit of such a sound. His hair and jacket floated gently in the air from the soft springtime breeze, sending only worries for what could be the sound.

"What's wrong?" Yang said, his face brightened by the sun beginning to wake after it's slumber. Jingfei's lips were as straight as a line as he looked over at Yang. "Something's….. It's a sound." Jingfei hesitated to describe it, but as he looked back forward, he saw a shadowy figure, their hand lowered to hold something. The shadowed figure had obviously seen both Yang and Jingfei, standing multiple meters behind the figure.

"What's that?" Yang whispered, not taking a step forward. Neither did Jingfei. The two stood, watching the figure. Watching as it took a step forward. "A person." Jingfei answered. As the person took a step forward, they walked into a circle of golden light, their features being shone by the blooming sun. Only then, did Jingfei sigh.

He began walking up to the person, with Yang behind him. The person smiled when they saw Jingfei and Yang, and as the two walked, Jingfei noticed what the person was holding. A dead body. Jingfei looked up at the other, though Yang didn't seem that weirded out by such a scene.

"Wei, please tell me you're not holding a dead body." Jingfei whispered softly. For as warm as spring might be, the breeze was frigid, freezing Jingfei's body. He stared at the dead body, their eyes closed. Wei calmly looked down before shaking his head. "Not dead, very much alive." Wei dropped the person to the ground, their body hitting the brick street with a smack.

Jingfei didn't know if that made him feel better. "Had a feeling there was a vampire following us last night. But I guess they wanted to kill us one by one." Wei informed calmly. He crossed his arms, staring down at the body for a moment before backing up at Jingfei and Yang. "What are you two doing up?" Wei questioned, walking over to them. He lightly placed his hand on Jingfei's chin, tilting the vamplings head from one side to the other, before looking over at Yang. "Did you make him do this?"

Yang widened his eyes before shaking his head. "Wha- no! I was just as good as Jingfei, right?" Yang asked, looking over at Jingfei. He wasn't in this conversation, he just wanted to make sure Wei was okay. And now that he was, he wanted to get away from these dark streets. "Uh…. I guess..?" Jingfei shrugged. Wei looked unconvinced, but he sighed, stepping back.

The vampire hunter groaned, slowly sitting up. Jingfei took a step back, ready to book it out of here, but Wei grabbed his arm, stopping him from doing any more than taking a single step back. "It's okay, he's unarmed. I threw all his weapons in the sewers." Wei informed us casually. The hunter looked up angrily at Wei. "YOU DID WHAT?!" The vampire hunter yelled, but Wei was calm as could be.

He crouched to be on the same level as the hunter, placing a hand on the man's shoulder. "Listen, kid. I'm going to give you some advice. Instead of trying to pick off a species that is way smarter, stronger, and faster than you, how about you actually do something smart. Because this isn't working well." Wei smiled happily at the hunter, watching as his face went pale from the simple insult. He didn't say anything for a moment, frozen from Wei's sharp smile.

"Wei, your tormenting the poor guy." Jingfei teased slightly. Wei looked up, shrugged for a moment, before looking back down. "Eh, deserves it." Wei stepped back, standing up straight. "I'll give you five seconds to run." Wei said, his voice still cheery. The man didn't believe him, yet he still stood, stepping slowly away from the small group.

"1…"

Jingfei was somewhat worried about what Wei would do. He sounded menacing, his voice low and dark as he counted. It was horrifying, Jingfei wouldn't lie. His normal professional aura having been drained and replaced with this new one. The man stood there, not knowing what exactly he was supposed to do.

"2.."

The man took another step back, before running off, dashing into the darkness. Wei laughed softly as he ran, uncrossing his arms and sighing. Jingfei looked over at him. Wei looked back for a moment before sighing. "I have a feeling the only reason they didn't try to fight me, Ying, and Chan was because Yang was there." Wei shrugged.

Jingfei was quiet for a minute before softly nodding. Yang turned to Wei. "What were you doing out here?" Yang asked, looking around. Their surroundings were eerie, and though Jingfei could see through the darkness, it didn't change the fact. Luckily, the sun slowly began to peek from behind the buildings, finally spreading light on such a darkened street.

"Got hungry." Wei said calmly. Jingfei looked at Wei with a look, and it took a moment for the elder to notice it, but when he did he sighed. "They are very much okay, Jingfei. Probably awake by now." Wei said, Jingfei looking down. The group was silent for a moment, before Yang spoke up.

"Jingfei, can we go to your cafe?"
