Chapter 37: The Heat

Jingfei stopped, closing his mouth. The man asked again. "Jingfei?" Jingfei was silent, lifting his head from the man's neck to look at him. Jingfei scanned the man's face. He was standing in the shadows, Jingfei didn't know who the person was, however, he huffed when he felt a shove coming from the man.

Jingfei didn't fall onto the ground, but he did stumble back slightly. He fell out of the light, as the man walked into it. Jingfei's eyes widened once he realized who it was. "K-kai?" Jingfei whispered. It was Kai, what was he doing here? Why was he even near the peak? Why was- "Holy shit I just kissed you.." Jingfei whispered, covering his mouth. Kai sighed, crossing his hands and leaning back on the wall. Jingfei didn't make any effort to move from the ground, instead continuing to sit there.

"Did you just try to bite me?" Kai asked, hyis arms crossed as he looked down at Jingfei. He felt like he was being scolded. Like he had done something wrong. Well, he had. He tried to bite his own coworker. That seems like a pretty bad thing to do. Jingfei combs his hair out of his face, slowly nodding. There were soft footsteps from beside him, and before Jingfei could see who it was, he heard Chan's voice.

Chan looked at the two. "So I'm going to assume things didn't go well?" Chan asked, his eyes going to Jingfei, who briefly nodded. "This is Kai, my friend." Jingfei introduced it mildly. Kai didn't say anything, keeping his head to the ground, his arms crossed. Chan looked down at Jingfeid. He lightly shrugged his shoulders. "Well, once or twice does this happen. You accidentally bite your friends-"

Ying walked in, his arms crossed similarly to Kai's. "Don't even. It shouldn't happen. How did you not realize that it was your friends?" Ying asked, looking over at Jingfei, who awkwardly sighed. "Uh… it was dark…. And his face was mostly covered. I couldn't really…-" Before Jingfei could finish, Kai stood up from his place on the wall. He looked over at Ying. "You." Kai muttered softly.

Ying looked at Kai with a weird expression, before lowering his arms. "Um, yeah. What?" Ying asked as Kai glared at him. "Where is the girl?" Kai asked. Ying continued to stare at Kai. Did Kai know Ying? He didn think he did, but maybe Jingfei was wrong. Maybe they stumbled into each other at some point. "What girl?" Ying questioned. Kai was silent for a moment, before sighing.

"You went out with a girl, why? Did you kill her or something?" Kai asked, as Ying quickly remembered what Kai was talking about. The whole alley stood quiet, even Ying didn't have much of an answer. Jingfei understood something about Kai then. He wasn't sitting there because he was lonely or sad, but because he was watching. Yet Jingfei still couldn't understand exactly what he was watching.

"You're all vampires, right? So you killed her? Are you going to kill me?"

He didn't seem worried, nor scared. His voice didn't shiver or shake, and his stance didn't deteriorate into a small ball. He wasn't scared that he was in a circle of blood thirsty vampires, and he wasn't scared that his life was being threatened. He seemed like he was more threatening than Ying, Jingfei, and Chan.

Ying sighed, shaking his head. "I didn't kill her." Ying said simply. His eyes half shut, either from annoyance or boredom. Kai stared at him, obviously not believing him. However, he didn't dare say anything else, his mouth cut in a line.Jingfei still didn't know something.

"How did you know that we were vampires?" Jingfei asked curiously. Kai's eyes went to him, and for a moment, a subtle and sadden look floated onto Kai's face, before disappearing as quickly as it came. He frowned at Jingfei. "It was obvious. Your f angs." Kai pointed out, pointing to his own, dull canine. Chan smiled.

"Why did your first thought go to a vampire?"

"Are you saying you're fictional and came out of an eighteen-hundred book?"

Chan shrugged, shaking his head. "Just saying, so? Jingfei has sharp teeth. It could be a defect." Chan answered calmly. Kai shook his head, not saying anything else to Chan and turning to Jingfei. "Jingfei, tell me the truth. Are you a vampire?" Jingfei was hesitant at first, but he nodded after a moment. "Yeah, I am.." Jingfei murmured softly. Jingfei was disappointed in himself for almost hurting Kai. He was disappointed that he almost hurt his own friend. Jingfei sighed.

"You wanna go out to eat?" Kai asked, crossing his arms once again. Jingfei looked back up at Kai happily. He looked back at Ying, who seemed hesitant. He glanced at Kai, before going to Jingfei. "Fine, fine. Just come back later. Be careful." Ying warned, Jingfei's face lighting up at Ying's approval. Chan shrugged. "Don't do anything I would do, okay?" Chan said with a soft laugh. Ying hit Chan's arms slightly, but Jingfei sharply nodded.

"Yes sir!"
