Ancestors

A blinding light escalated, blanketing the entire globe. It was warm as if the sun itself had fallen; making trees grow on unfertile land, filling deserts with rain water. Some even describe seeing dead loved ones standing before them.

The simple-minded beings of the land, smitten by what they witnessed, spread out their arms to envelop this angelic radiance. The light accepted their invitation and dispersed into tiny wisps of energy that absorbed into their eyes.

After that… absolute darkness. It was as if all light had been sucked out of the planet. Blindness engulfed all those who accepted the light. Panic spread amongst them. Fights broke out at the brink of winter. Many fell ill in the days to come while others passed away in the cold.

It was mid-winter, when a group of wanderers appeared on their land, claiming to have retained their gift of sight. They were miners from underground where the light had not touched. However, something did find them in the dark. It spoke to them of a way to rid the people of their suffering.

Just at the edge of town existed a large pit where the land was divided into two. It had opened up around the same time when the light first appeared. The wanderers bravely headed down the pit until they completely disappeared from light.

It hadn't been long since their descent when people's eyes began to recover. Roars of cheers and celebrations were held, yet the wanderers never returned from the pit. Later it was discovered that the pit had closed, leaving just a large crack in the ground. Over time, trees concealed it like it was never there. Very soon it became a forest and was named Darkwood, for ever since its existence, no light would ever enter that place.

According to rumors, the power of the shadow slumbered there…

As time went on, few of the people who had been affected by the light discovered they could do unimaginable things. Traces of the light still remained in them, it seemed.

However, just the idea of the power returning a second time would have terrified the people. Which is why they chose to keep it hidden…
