Chapter 21: Roses and Gold

“Mack! I hadn’t heard from you since Friday. Are you ok?” Donovan’s voice rings high with concern.

“Yeah, I’m…” I look around at the dinner that I’m cleaning up, scooping up half of it and putting it in Roxy’s fridge.

I spot a pecan pie in a glass pie pan.

“...good. I just needed some ‘me time.’ Sorry, didn’t mean to worry you, or ditch you Friday for that matter,” I confess, but I know I don’t sound sorry.

I sound content.

“I’m glad you’re doing alright, just don’t ghost me again, you worried me,” Donovan said, and a part of that sentence doesn’t sit well with me.

“You mean like how you ghosted me?” I know it’s petty, but it feels so good and justified.

Why should I have to be the one who doesn’t ghost him?

“Ouch. Yeah, I may have deserved that. But, I got a surprise for you.” Donovan doesn’t sound chastised.

I hope he doesn’t think a simple present can untangle everything knotted between us.
