Chapter 24: We Are The Same

Mary-Allison Flagstone

He’s ashamed. Ashamed for relying on his instincts. What it must have been like for Christopher in the early days of his curse, confused, heartbroken—To keep living for someone you can’t find, when all you want to do is love them. ‘Where is the crime in that?’ A trail of broken hearts haunts him. The souls he’s stolen shout at him. But I don’t care. I’d do the same if it meant I’d end up at this exact moment in time with him.

“Do you fear death, Mary?”

His ivy eyes water. Christopher breaks. I won’t let him fall apart alone. I’ll hand him the pieces of me I’ve kept throughout the years. And I’ll put myself together with the missing parts of him that we find along the way. We will be whole.

“I used to seek it out.”

He turns his head away. I guide his face back toward me with a gentle touch.

“But now, I fear death—I fear losing you, Christopher.”

“I don’t deserve any of this, Mary—I don’t deserve to be happy after the things I’ve done.”
