A girl named June, was in the woods in Huttonsville, West Virginia where she now lived. June had been making her new home for months now; June had run away from home because of her mom, June's mom wanted June dead. June ran away on her seventh birthday, she had heard her mom speaking to someone about a plan to kill June the night of her birthday. June had to learn how to survive while on the run, she was able to make arrows and bows out of wood now as well as shoot the arrows to catch her meals, it was hard work but June seemed to be enjoying her new life. June placed the last branch and sighed with contentment as her home was now finished, there would be no more leaks when it rained and there would be no intruders due to the traps made around and in the home. June rearranged her bag and blanket before heading back outside to grab some firewood for a fire. June stuck close to her home, there were weird things in the forest and headed back once she had gathered enough wood. June stacked the wood in her handmade fire hole, once she was satisfied with how the wood was stacked she grabbed her bow and arrows and walked into the woods to get her dinner. June stalked through the woods being as quiet as possible. A stick breaking made June turn her head to the right, a deer was eating grass unaware that it would become dinner for June. June started the fire as she prepared the deer for dinner, she was going to full tonight. June finished eating and started to haul the leftover away from her home so she didn't attract unwanted attention. June threw the bones and uncooked meat over the hill and turned to go home when she heard sticks breaking all around her. June didn't have her bow and arrows with her, so she grabbed the pocket knife she stole from her old home and prepared to fight whatever was coming her way. June pressed her back against a tree and calmed her breathing, she listened closely to the sticks breaking, and then the noise stopped. June became confused and peeked her head around the tree to see if there was any danger, and she was met with red eyes staring at her grey ones.
"Ahhhhh!" June screamed and stumbled back from the thing looking at her,
"You don't have to be afraid" a voice entering June's head said; June looked everywhere wondering where the voice was coming from.
"I'm not here to hurt you, only to protect and cherish" the voice entered June's head again and this time June looked back at the red eyes,
"Yes, I am the one you hear" the red eyes moved forward to show the black body they belonged to. June stared at the black hound that emerged from the shadows like it was a shadow itself.
"I'm Roxy, your Hellhound June" the hound spoke after sitting in front of the tree June had hidden behind.
"Hellhound?" June questioned as her body began to relax seeming to know that the hound wouldn't hurt her,
"I'm a servant of Lord Hades, the ruler of the Underworld" Roxy explained and June nodded as if she understood, then June was overwhelmed with confusion
"Wait, how do I understand you and what you are explaining?" June asked
"You'll know when the time is right," Roxy said as if she was smiling proudly. June walked back to her home with Roxy in tow,
"So why are you following me?" June asked Roxy
"Because I'm to protect and cherish you. You are my life partner, it's like a relationship between a human and a dog!" Roxy explained with excitement and June laughed at how cute Roxy could be and wondered how she could have been so scared by Roxy when they first met. June showed Roxy around all the traps so Roxy could make it to their home safely.
"And here is our home Roxy," June said as she smiled at the home she had made,
"Incredible June! You're only seven and yet you've survived months by yourself!" Roxy said astonished by her owner's brilliance,
"Thanks, Roxy" June replied with joy filling her body. June and Roxy spent the next few days getting to know each other and helping each other with hunting and other life-saving tactics. June and Roxy came home with a deer and entered their home laughing from the hunt they just had.
"Roxy diner is ready!" June shouted to her companion
"I'm coming" Roxy replied and came bounding out of the home,
"Ohh deer, let's dig in June," Roxy said as soon as she sat down
"Chow down" June laughed at Roxy as Roxy ate the deer like she hadn't eaten in days. June walked with Roxy as Roxy carried the bones from their meal.
"Just throw them over the hill Roxy" June told Roxy while June picked up sticks to bring back home,
"Sure" Roxy replied as she threw the bones over the hill.
"You know it's a good thing you have some arrowheads and daggers made out of those bones, otherwise you'd be protecting yourself with wood," Roxy said as she tossed the last bone over the hill,
"Yeah, it did get scary when all I had was wood weapons that could break at any moment." June agreed as she turned to head back home, but suddenly there was a scream in the distance
"Let's go Roxy" June yelled as she took off toward the scream
"Get on" Roxy shouted as she ran next to June who nodded and jumped onto Roxy's back. June and Roxy ran towards the noise and screams,
"What do you think is happening?" June asked Roxy
"I don't know but it sounds like a fight" Roxy replied
'Let's get there quickly and help" June said to Roxy,
"Okay but make sure you hold on" Roxy replied as she melted into the shadows with June.
