Sevir extended his hand, engulfed in fire, and picked up the crystal, intending to talk to RuIng. Despite the fire in his hand, the surface of the crystal felt warmer. Little by little, the fire in his hand entered the clear surface of the crystal. A knot in his gut loosened and excitement fluttered up.
“RuIng?” he called tentatively. RuIng looked sideways, eyes wide, mouth hanging open. Sevir smiled widely at RuIng’s surprise. “I did it. I did it.”
He threw his head back and really laughed. “This thing runs on energy. And the only energy I could think you could give it was fire. And didn’t you say that the orb saved you by absorbing fire before?”
“I do not know what to say,” said RuIng with a smile that said everything for him.
Sevir rubbed his face, the back of his neck and ran his hand through his hair. “My father was a researcher. I got it from him.”
