Facing the sight before her eyes, Inis trembled a little with anticipation.
There was several fires that had spread around the surrounding area that was beyond the cover of the forest.
Another fortress that was similar to the one she had infiltrated had flames and black smoke coming from within.
The buildings and other parts of the insides were on fire as some shadows were cast by the flames which showed the outlines of people who had cowered in fear, running away or were making a combat pose as they readied to take on the threat.
The clothes concealed the body of Inis well enough to make her difficult to distinguish by others from an ordinary human so long as they did not look to closely at her.
The hood was pulled over her head and her overall size would make her be mistaken as a small child that had been heavily wrapped up in layers of clothes.
Her sleeves were quite long so they helped to cover up a lot of her longer arms and claws while her feet were wrapped in cloth strips to better conceal the different shape a little.
Most of her green skin had been concealed but there were always parts of her features that would stand out if someone took a more careful look at her whether it was her arm length, her hands and feet size or just looking closer under the hood to see her face.
Beneath the hood of her clothes, her mouth widened as her sharp teeth were showing as her magenta eyes glowed.
Her legs began to move forward towards the source of the conflict as her pace gradually increased with each step taken.
Inis was not yet aware of how the situation ahead would affect her future plans or what kind of action she would take once she got there.
She was stepping into the unknown where anything could happen.
She could be dragged into the conflict, make enemies, forge alliances, make friends or even choose to go on a mass rampage depending on what she encountered.
If she did make a move to intervene then she needed to ensure her own safety while carefully trying to better understand the overall cause and effect of the events.
There were always cases where saving those under attack who were believed to be the victims may not always have been the best course of action morally or in a way that would be most beneficial.
Inis did not know everything so the conflict and attacks could have been justified in some way.
If she was seeking gains for helping others then it may have been better to side with the winning side unless the losing side were more desperate and had something useful to offer her.
There was a part of her former self that was torn between what she once believed in and what she had come to live by in order to survive and possibly get her revenge.
The hero in her from her past was whispering to her to aid the weak and protect the lives of others.
The new Gremlin self that had formed from her past life's betrayal was whispering to her to seek out any possibly gains and opportunities to fuel her rise to power even if it meant destroying her past beliefs.
Her Gremlin self added on within her consciousness as if to retort to her stubbornness to let her past self go. 'You are no longer human. Why bother helping them? They will not thank a monster for saving them. What is the point?'
Her past human self had argued back. 'Do not listen to that nonsense. Human? Monster? None or that matters! If you have the power to do so then help those that are in need of it. Your good deeds will surely be repaid.'
It was like she had an angel and devil sitting on her shoulders that were arguing among themselves and trying to convince her towards taking a certain path.
The two sides were in conflict with each other and did not seem to be able to reach an understanding.
She finally crept closer to the walls and circled around the sides carefully hiding herself.
There was more noise coming from around the corner further down the wall that had a large gate in the middle of it.
The gate had been opened and was a little damaged while there were a group of people waiting outside with armed guards that were carrying cold weapons and energy guns.
They were busy making some noise among themselves as they boasted over how successful the operation was going.
Others were running around to make reports as the details of the battle had resulted in some casualties on their side from the people that resisted capture.
A larger group of people came from inside the walls and pulled out several trembling figures one after another.
One man was pulled out and was made to kneel before the person that looked to be the leader of the attacking force but struggled against those that forced him down.
He spat towards the leader which resulted in him being hit across the face with a wooden club which had knocked him out or had possibly even killed him.
More people were brought out of the walls by more armed men and women which had been restrained by ropes or chains as they were linked to those in front of them being pulled forward.
The people who had won the battle and had taken others captive had revealed faces that showed their disdain and a lack pity towards those who had lost everything in such a short period of time.
Inis poked her head out from the corner and watched some of it as she took in the sight of the cold reality of how the darkness of humanity had shown itself. 'Perhaps that darkness has always been there. It is just that I was not looking close enough.'
It was like a reminder about the darkness that existed even during the past and the many things she missed.
Everything looked so clean on the surface as everyone worked together with a unified goal of saving the world but she failed to see much closer and more clearly what was going on around her.
It made her think about what else she could have possibly missed during her time in the dungeons.
It made another question pop up in her mind once she thought about it.
Was the human race truly worth saving and worth all her sacrifices and efforts from back then?
She had to admit that part of her wanted to succeed in what she was doing and to become a part of something bigger than herself but there was also the need to turn around the looming threat over everyone's head.
If she looked just a little closer and came to learn about the hidden truths of the world that existed beyond her range of sight then would she have still wanted to save the world back then?
There was a feeling of disgust within herself as she thought over how naive she had been and what else she could have possibly missed back then.
The same disgust was held towards the sight before her eyes which had reminded her of humanities darker past. 'Slaves..'
She had learned about such events from history based books since slavery was outlawed during the time before the dungeons arrived and was believed to be during her lifetime too but looking at the sight before her, Inis was unsure if that really was the case.
Just because something was not shown to the public and was seen as immoral to everyone did not mean that it did not exist within the shadows of the world.
Inis coldly watched them take off with their loot and slaves that had come from the raid on the fortress and those living inside of it.
Once they had started to use their horses and carriages to pull along their loot and the slaves towards one direction, Inis slowly came out and looked for a more advantageous position to look from as she kept a watch over them.
She kept her distance and carefully followed behind in the hopes of tracking where they would be returning to.
