Chapter 6: The Carnival Comes to Wat

What they don’t tell you about fighting a conspiracy is that there are long stretches of time where nothing happens. It had been two weeks since that fateful night, two weeks since we learned the name of our enemy, and…nothing. Absolutely nothing had developed. Not a peep out of the cult, nothing out of the ordinary from our two only suspects. One might get complacent from this, but the Princess, to her credit, kept us on task.

Well, she did, until the carnival came to Wat.

“I wish to attend the carnival,” she said. “As a commoner.”

I nearly choked on my morning coffee. “As…My lady is that really necessary?”

“It is entirely necessary,” she replied. “Every year that carnival comes, and every year I am escorted through in an “official capacity”.”

“Meaning you don’t actually do anything?”
