Chapter 14: The Meeting Begins

I tensed up when I saw the Zorian auto-carriage carrying the emissary. They were all over Zor last time I was there, they probably became even more commonplace in the years since. Next to it, the Gedian horse-drawn carriage looked primitive. But the comparison grew far more favorable when the dignitaries stepped out of their carriages and onto the red carpet that was rolled out for them by the handmaidens.

“Introducing Lord Samuel J. Clarke of Ged and Duke Phineas Rutledge of Zor!” cried the announcer. Samuel Clarke was a bawdy-looking fellow, barely fitting his massive shoulders through the tiny door of the carriage. It reminded me of the carnival, how the clowns would all pile into a single, tiny little carriage and then emerge from it onstage. His attire was stately but simple, not a man who liked to show off.
