Chapter 16

Lucas

As the chick goes off in a hurry, Max comes over, smirking. "Are you gonna let go of her or what?" He looks rather tickled. Obviously, he had seen what happened earlier. They immediately release each other, faces flushed.

"What are you doing here?' Christopher rubs the back of his neck, glancing back. Is he worried that the manager will come out and see them?

"We came cause I wanted new books! Lucas said he'd go too so we can all have lunch together, and he can go for his shift after." Evangeline exclaims excitedly.

"That's nice." Max flashes her a smile, and she beams back at him. "What about Asher?"

"He's working on another project," she replies. Chris claps her on the shoulder. "We get off in five. Wait for us, kay?" She nods enthusiastically.

"Let's wait for them outside." I put my hand on her back and guide her out of the noisy arcade. The twins jog off, not before turning back to smile at her. She doesn't see it, though. I hope one day she realises that we all care for her. Much more than she will ever know.
