"Do you think this is going to work?" I whispered against Jaxon’s shoulder.

I liked our plan, and I couldn’t see another solution, but I didn’t like the idea of having to trust Marino. He’d already proved himself a snake. I couldn’t believe there was a time I thought he wasn’t so bad.

"I don’t know, but I agree with you that we don’t have many other choices. If this goes too badly, we might have to more seriously consider our other plan of leaving and settling somewhere else."

I daydreamed momentarily about where we could go. Somewhere sunnier and with more beaches sounded nice. But all my friends were here. Jaxon’s mom and his life were here. I couldn’t see us really leaving. I glanced up at Jaxon, and it seemed the same thought crossed his mind too. It was hard not to let the overwhelming feeling of hopeless anxiety take over.

I cuddled closer to his shoulder. He wrapped his arms tighter around me. I let myself be comforted by the strong muscles of his arms.
