Chapter 189 : The Setup

I woke up the next morning to a cold, gray day. The cloudy skies and drizzle seemed to mirror my emotions, I thought as I poured a cup of coffee and gazed out the window. Even King looked grumpy this morning, snorting when I opened the door to go outside, and giving me what I swore was a dirty look when he regarded the precipitation.

"Sorry, buddy, I don't have anything to do with the weather," I informed him, and I was startled by the voice behind me.

Jaxon, of course, standing behind me was wearing a grin.

"So, you're having full-on conversations with the dog now, huh," my husband remarked with a teasing glint in his eyes. "I mean, don't get me wrong, there are definitely worse individuals to chat with, but unless there's something I don't know, he can't talk back."

Wise ass, I thought, but nonetheless appreciated his attempt at humor. I knew I hadn't exactly been myself lately.
