I blinked and tried to think of the best response. I didn’t want to upset her further. I didn’t want to keep fighting with her. But I didn’t have the same faith in the legal channels as she did. I knew better how many of them were in the pockets of the mob.
Even just taking ‘legal channels’ could get us connected to the mob again. I couldn’t see a way around it. If the mob life was coming after us, we couldn’t avoid dipping our toes back in, but it didn’t mean I would submerge us completely.
Sara sat anxiously waiting for me to answer. I swallowed hard as I nodded.
"Okay, I won’t, I promise," I answered. I knew I’d try really hard to keep that promise but it was likely that the mafia would come find me again and come after me.
Sara smiled weakly and nodded. She reached her hands out to me and I took them.
"We will do this together," I said. "We will keep our family safe. But for now, I need to take care of you."
