I pushed open the door as carefully as I could and glanced around. There didn’t seem to be any people around, but the place was full of boxes and pallets. Someone could easily be hiding. The boxes looked reasonably new; someone had been using this space and recently.
I resisted the urge to curse and kick the nearby boxes. I tried to remind myself there could still be people here. There could be someone hiding. I tried to hold onto hope.
I looked at Sara, and she seemed equally disappointed and a bit confused. I kept it together for her.
"What is going on?" she mouthed.
I glanced around the room. It seemed as if someone had been using this space to load and ship some kind of product, but I wasn’t that interested in figuring out what it was. I wanted Vitullo, and that was it. I wanted my children, and I knew they weren’t here.
"I’m not sure, follow me," I whispered back.
