I stared at the body until it became a weirdly blurred image in my mind. I had been in shootouts before, but this was the first time I knew for sure it was my bullet that killed someone.
I knew it was my fault, and I still felt strangely calm. My hand was shaky but my breathing was normal. The body wasn’t Theo. I didn’t recognize him. He must have been one of Theo’s guards.
Part of me felt a little bit of regret, wishing my aim had been better. Most of me just felt sort of numb.
"Sara, let’s go," Max urged, reaching for my wrist again.
I let him pull me away and back toward the car. He let me go as soon as he realized I was coming away with him without an argument. I climbed in and sighed with exasperation, finally feeling something.
