“Call Dan,” I tell my mate, “Quickly. We need to warn him.” 


My mate nods and dials while I face Veronica. Even though those charmed cuffs have got to be uncomfortable, she’s smirking at me, and it’s making me uneasy. 


“Who is she,” I ask her, terrified, “Who have you sent after Dan?” 


“My daughter,” she replies, her voice dripping with malice, “And you’re already too late.” 


“Cindy, where the hell have you been?” I ask my friend, “I’ve been looking all over for you! I’ve been so worried!” 


When Cindy finally called me, I dropped everything and ran. She said she was in trouble, and gave me this address. It’s not a great part of town, so I guess that’s why she lied about where she lives. I don’t care about any of that. It makes me so sad that she thought that mattered to me. 


“Thank you for coming,” she says, and her voice sounds strange, “I’m really glad to see you.”
