Penn smiled at Brooke. He understood that this was against her grain to obey orders, but he had no choice. He had to convince her to stay at the house until he was sure the danger had passed.
“Thank you, Brooke. Now tell me more about your writing.”
She blushed a little. “It’s not something I talk about, but I hope to get a contract someday. Then I could quit my part-time job at the coffee shop.”
“I didn’t know you work at a coffee shop.
“Not regularly, but they call me if they need me. I’m there once a week, but I make great tips so it helps. I’m guessing I can’t go there either.”
He reached across the table, having an overwhelming desire to touch her. She needed reassurance because she was far outside her comfort zone. “I’m sorry this is so disruptive, Brooke. I wish I could speed things along for you.”
She smiled. “I know, Penn. I’m not used to having someone else tell me what to do.”
“Please listen to my advice. I want to keep you safe.”
