With the house quiet, Brooke was sure she was making a lot of noise, but Jeeves didn’t materialize as she made her way to the front door. She carried her bag instead of rolling it in hopes that she wouldn’t wake anyone.
Of course, she didn’t know where Penn’s bedroom was, so she didn’t even know if she could wake him.
She was determined. She could call a car when she was close to the gate. A moon shining down on her would help since she doubted there were any lights on her path down the driveway.
She paused hearing a noise, but it was just the house settling. She let out a breath. This was going to be easy if she could just slow her heart rate.
The steps creaked as she walked down them. Still, no one stirred.
She couldn’t wait to get out of the front door. If she made it that far, she thought she was home free. She hadn’t remembered that there were so many steps, but then she finally reached the bottom. Pausing, she listened, but she didn’t hear any movement in the house.
