Chapter 50: Things Can Return to Normal

Penn pulled into his driveway a few days later. He sighed as he drove up the long driveway to what would be an empty house. Brooke was officially gone today. He hadn’t been able to give her a reason to stay. He hadn’t been able to verbalize his feelings for her and he couldn’t keep her here against her will.

He hadn’t even offered to help her move and now he was feeling like a heel.

He sighed as he drove into his garage, parking the car. He grabbed his stuff and climbed out. Bracing himself, he entered the house. The garage door led to a mudroom and he took off his shoes.

That’s when he heard the humming. It was off-key, but he knew it wasn’t Mrs. Hastings. He kept a weapon in the mudroom and he retrieved it.

He found Jeeves first. The man was standing with his coat on.

“Jeeves?”

“Miss Madison gave me the night off. I wanted to make sure with you that it was okay before I walk to my cottage.”
