“I had to make sure,” Onyx purrs. “Now there isn’t a doubt in my mind.”
“Of what?”

Everything makes sense now. The reason Sparrow hadn’t walked with them to the village, her change in behavior, and her distant behavior when Marcus left them. 


“You’re my brother’s mate,” Selene says matter-of-factly. 


“And that’s why you ordered me to stand down,” Onyx adds.


Sparrow looks down at her plate. “I didn’t want to, and I know I shouldn’t have, but my emotions were all over the place,” she says while looking up at the Alpha. “I’m hoping you will forgive me. You two know when your mate's in trouble you will do anything to protect them.”


Selene understands, but she can feel Onyx hesitating to accept Sparrow’s explanation. He finally gets up and walks over to get some food. Sparrow cleans her plate before Onyx fills his own and she excuses herself to go back to her room.


Once she’s gone, Onyx settles in across the table from Selene. He looks tired, as if the last few days have been years and he hasn’t slept a wink.
