I've somehow made it to my car after Supreme Argon let me out of that office. I didn't feel my walk rods carrying me out. I didn't see the workers or my surroundings. I didn't hear the voices or sounds of machinery. The only thing I could see was the face of Supreme Argon and the only thing I could hear were his threats.
*Phone vibrates*
C - Stop by my office after work today.'
The notification from Cindy pops up on my device.
I don't know if that's safe - M
C - ????
I think people might find out - M
C - Don't worry it's confidential :)
No. I fucked up. They're on to me - M
C - ....I don't get it
I don't want people to see me go to the clinic after today - M
Cindy takes a minute to respond.
C - Where are you?
I'm in the parking lot of Double Deal - M
Wait, why?
C - Give me a minute
*****
6:25pm
It's been about an hour since Cindy told me to wait for her. I should be annoyed, but to be honest, I'm too pre-occupied with replaying my meeting with the Supreme. My grabbers haven't stopped trembling since then and I probably would have needed a while to chill before driving anyways.
Wait a minute...
I'm so stupid.
I reach for the syringes that have been sitting in the little drawers in front of me and hold them up. Ugh, a true saving grace.
"How could I have forgotten about you guys?"
*TAP TAP*
"Moon!"
It's Cindy. I drop the syringe that was about 1 cm away from my sheath.
"Let me in!" She beams excitedly.
She hops into the car and throws a big bag around to the back seat.
"Damn, what's in there?"
"You're uniform", she smirks
"Huh?"
"Moon, if we're taking this journey to the next level, we gonna need to take extra precautions! We need to dig deeper!", She exhales sharply, still catching her breath from rushing here with that hefty bag on her shoulder.
"Meaning?"
"I'm sneaking you into the Head Office at the hospital and we're gonna look into your files. I'm thinking it can shed light on these past situations as well as if you're genetic history plays a role. Maybe piece together timelines and absences that can explain when you could have had these experiences that you keep blasting back to. We should be back at Superhuman Sanctuary in time for the last meal and bed. "
"Okay....but that doesn't explain the bag".
"That's one of my uniforms. You're gonna have to put it on so you're not detected and no authorities are notified for suspicious activity."
"I-"
"Just change and I'll tell you the plan".
*******
"So basically, you're gonna take me into my family doctor's office and peep through my confidential files and you think that might reveal whether my parents ever dealt with blastbacks and how they treated it?"
"Correct".
Cindy and I sit in my car plotting in front of the hospital.
"But you were actually given access to these files since he mentored you and appointed you as one the top psychologists or some shit?"
"Tehe, correct" she giggles mischievously
"So we're not really sneaking in anywhere, then. Since you have permission."
"Oh right, let me clarify", she clears her throat, "I'm sneaking YOU in. There's no problem with me being here. We just have to do it during these hours because all the surveillance is turned off. Thank God we're not the 24 hour hospital down the street, am I right?" she chuckles.
I roll my lenses and open the car door to get out.
"Wait! Masks," She urgently reminds me.
"Ugh"
We press down on the buttons placed on the shoulders of our suits. The metallic shells come up from the collar of our uniforms and unite around the top of our heads. The face shields fall before our faces. The top is dimmed and appears pitch black on the outside but fades you light shimmery silver towards the bottom, exposing only our mouths to outsiders.
"Oh come on! When do you guys ever need these on the job? You fix People!"
"Well, Moon, everyone knows human machines aren't that different from the ones you guys work on at Double Deal."
I trail closely behind Cindy, following her lead just like we discussed. We get to the top floor and she unlocks the door to what looks like a hotel suite except the walls are replaced with file cabinets.
"Alright this shouldn't take too long. We just take the remote and go through the holographic reports."
At the center of the room is a table with remotes laying face down. They are all labelled alphabetically, letters A to B plastered on the back. Cindy grabs the remote with the letter C on it. She starts pressing some buttons and the letters appear in thin air as a holograph.
'Castillo' was floating and glowing in front of our lenses when she was done.
REPORT : CODE MARIE CASTILLO
Glowing in bright red, flashing like police lights as if it were some kind of emergency.
Mama?
"There's a code named after your Mom?" Cindy turns to me puzzled.
''Well......I don't know if you know this but my Mom's death was confirmed as health related, so...",
I clear my throat and try to avoid getting too deep into the subject.
Cindy presses another button.
"But it says it was forwarded from the Engineering Department by Supreme Argon."
"What?"
I grab the remote and press 'Open' without even thinking.
A drawer from one of the cabinets bursts open and a holograph report floats up from it.
The report reads in neon green:
Suspect: Moon Castillo
Offense: Signs of knowledge and/or investigation of Earth
Evidence: - Non-mechanical language directed to human parts: "Wait, watch your HANDS" - Interest in the planet (admitted to finding information and "theories") - Suggested flying our first and only model of the DDD ship to Earth - Implied knowledge of life on the planet (appeared nervous when further questioned on the topic): "The people there seem to be surviving just fine".
"Whoa......you really did all that?", Cindy asks while still staring right at the holograph. She's frozen in disbelief while I'm frozen in fear.
"Yep. And it all went down today." I quietly admit.
"....... You really suggested flying the ship to Earth?" She turns to me, her face screwed in confusion of my stupidity.
"It slipped out! I mean we spent all this time looking into my life there, we're launching a whole ass ROCKETSHIP that has to land somewhere! Why wouldn't I think about going there?! I don't know if you've noticed but not much else has been on my mind lately."
I close the holograph, frustated with the whole situation.
"Ohhhh so this is what you were talking about when you said they were on to you!" Cindy gasps.
"Yeah, and now they have it on file to stay on my ass!"
"Wait but I still don't get it."
"What's there not to get, Cindy!"
"Well... what does knowing about Earth have to do with your Mom? So much so that they named situations like this after her? I mean you're the only suspect under this code so that must mean it is an extremely rare occurrence. Definitely not prominent enough name after a specific person. Also, why would knowing about Earth even be named as a threat along with stealing, fraud and stuff like that. None of which are named after people. All those files are explicitly named after the crime itself followed by letter or number codes. ''
"After what they did to my Mom when she was just getting close to finding the truth"
"Just imagine if anyone knows that you want to go there...."
"I made sure they knew I found out the truth before I left."
Oh my God. No....maybe....
"Maybe because like stealing and fraud, Mama was a threat too."
Cindy stares at me frightened but there's no way she could be as frightened as I am right now.
"Oh okay, now we really can't give up! We just gotta be a little more cautious about our research before they put me under this file with you! Maybe you should stop by my office again tomorrow and we can do another hypnosis to blast you back and-"
"No!, I don't wanna know what happened next."
"What?! Moon, you can't give up! Even if it's bad, there is something important about every blastback otherwise your processor wouldn't bring you back to those times!"
"You don't understand, Cindy. What happened last time was just....it just wasn't good."
"Oh yeah, you still haven't told me what happened-"
"Yep, and I'm not going to!" I cut her off.
Cindy pauses, glares at me, then gasps.
"Did something go wrong with Aroha?" She asks softly
I grunt, annoyed that she won't let this go.
"Yes! Okay yes, something happened with her. But that's not the only problem. You saw the files! You see how the authorities are about this shit! I need them off my ass and blasting back isn't gonna help!"
"Not even if it has something to do with your Mom! I mean my God, Moon how can you look at that file and not want to know!
"After what they did to my Mom when she was just getting close to finding the truth"
"Just imagine if anyone knows that you want to go there...."
"I made sure they knew I found out the truth before I left."
"I'm sorry....sore topic," Cindy quietly apologizes,
"But Moon, don't you remember when you first told me about the blastbacks and you said in one of them you worried about THEM coming after you? Don't you wanna know who THEY are?"
I look up realizing that I had zoned out for a moment and see Cindy's suggestive face.
"Moon, haven't wondered why you even went to Earth in the first place?"
I think back to that blastback and how it felt standing in that living room and feeling fear of something I'm not even sure of. It was the same feeling I had when I left the Supremes' office.
THEM.
"You're right", I admit out loud,
"There's more about my life that they don't want me to know. I wanna know why."
I need to keep blasting back.
Not to learn more about my life on Earth, but to learn about my life on Mechanon.
