In one's formative years, childhood trauma literally re-writes the brain's circuitry in order to protect itself and forever alters their development and behavioral patterns.

Even if there were to be a resolution of one's applicable trauma, there still would be no return to 'normalcy'.

Even though Lailah and her mother have a fairly good relationship now, in the original timeline things were not so picture perfect.
