Mom, he spoke

Lyre struggled as he tried to get away from her, but the more he tried to do that, the more pain she unleashed on him. Until...

"Brother, what's wrong?" Clar who has walked into the room to bring Lyre down for dinner was surprised to see her beloved brother struggling on the bed sweating like a person on whom a bucket of water was poured.

She had to shake Lyre more than thrice before he woke up, gasping like a person who has been underwater for more than ten minutes.

His eyes darted around the room, searching for his mother.

Lyre's heart was beating miles a minute.

"Brother, what's wrong?"

Startled, Lyre kicked Clar.

"Ouch!" Clar cried out when her butt made an unwanted collision with the ground. "What did you do that for?" She frowned while rubbing her butts.

Scared, Lyre could only watch her.

He was at a loss of what to do, and at the same time, he feared what the mother will do to him should she find her daughter on the ground.

He hastily rose from the bed and knelt in front of Lyre. "I'm sorry!" He shouted, but it was more like a whisper to Clar.

"You spoke?" Clar blinked as she watched him. Her eyes grew wide like saucers.

"You spoke?" She whispered.

Lyre blinked.

He didn't understand what she said, and why she was looking at him with that expression of awe when she should have been angry or sad.

"Oh, my God! You spoke?" Clar rose from the floor, startling Lyre, who was still trying to understand what she was talking about.

"Mom! My brother can speak!"

Before Lyre can blink, Clar was already out of his room.

Lyre sat on the floor, trying to understand what was happening.

He was as confused as he was scared.

Speaking to Rain was one thing, but letting the mother know he can speak is yet another.

He was afraid their mother will be the same as his mother, who detests the sound of his voice.

It will be a miracle if his mother can recognize his voice.

"Mom!" Clar screamed, alerting Rain, who was playing video games with his friends.

"What's it, darling?" The mother rushed upstairs to know what got her daughter this excited.

"Mom, you can't guess what happened." Clar smiled from ear to ear. She was almost bursting with happiness with the way she kept on shining her teeth.

Rain had to pause his game, to see what the shouts and excitement were all about.

"What's it, darling?" The mother knelt in front of her daughter and held her hands in hers.

Despite not knowing what made her daughter this excited, the mother was still smiling as she looked at her daughter.

"He spoke." Clar jumped, unable to stay at a place. She was so excited, it feels like she was on top of the world.

"What are you talking about? Who spoke?" The mother asked.

Rain, who already understood the situation, ran into Lyre's room, to check on him.

"My brother spoke! Mom, he spoke!"

"What? Your new brother?" The mother widened her eyes. "Are you certain about this?"

"Yes, mother. I am! Brother spoke, and his voice was like that of angels!"

Before the mother could say anything else, Clar was already dragging her towards the room.

She was excited to show the mother her new brother, who luckily wasn't as mute as they predicted.

When they came in, they found Rain sitting on Lyre's bed, while Lyre stood next to the window.

Before they came in, Rain was trying to calm Lyre, who thought he was in trouble for speaking.

"Mom, he—"

Rain started to say, but the mother cut him shut.

"What's your name?" She asked in a kind voice, so as not to spook the boy.

Lyre was shocked.

He thought the mother will be abusive, and had resigned himself to the punishment he knew was on the way.

It came as a surprise to hear the mother speaking so calmly to him.

Rain watched Lyre, to see how he will react to the question.

"Lyre."

Lyre whispered, without looking at the mother.

His heart was still beating so fast, it almost deafened Rain's sensitive ears.

"Lyre? What a handsome name!" The mother palmed her chest as a tear slipped from her eyes.

"Brother Lyre!"

Clar ran to him and hugged him.

Lyre wasn't shocked about it, since he has gotten used to Clar hugging him every chance she gets.

"What a beautiful sight." The mother sniffed as she watched them. She had a beautiful smile on her face as tears of joy slipped from her eyes.

Indeed, she doesn't know who Lyre was but hearing him speak for the first time since they found it, made her feel so ecstatic.

However, Rain wasn't as happy as the mother. He had his eyes narrowed at Clar who was hugging Lyre as if she were afraid he might slip off her hands should care not to be taken.

He glanced at Lyre to check if he was looking at him, but when he saw Lyre looking at Clar with a soft expression, it made him angry.

Lyre has never let him touch him even after spending time with him, yet, he didn't object to having Clar touch him.

It angered Rain so much, he decided to leave before he does something he might regret.

"I'm going out for a walk, call me when it's time for dinner." Rain said as he stood.

"It's time for dinner. Let's go—"

"I will be waiting for you downstairs," Rain said before he left, banging the door shut when he left.

Lyre watched him depart but didn't say a word.

"Let's go downstairs, should we?" The mother clapped her hands in Glee. "You will love the foods I made, Lyre. I made sure to make it to your taste."

Chuckling, the mother led the way to the dining, with Lyre and Clar close behind her.

"Are you happy to be my brother?" Clar asked in a small voice.

"Yes." Lyre nodded since that was the only thing he can think of to do.
