Henry knew he had to be cold towards Princess Marie because, otherwise, he was going to break down and go on about how unfair it was that she caused him to feel that way. She didn't care enough to hear an explanation.
It felt like his heart had been torn out of his chest so cruelly and when he was finally able to retrieve it from her, she threw it on the ground and stomped on it in front of him.
Unconsciously, he grabbed at the neckline of his tunic as if he really was in pain from some kind of injury to his heart. It did feel like a physical injury.
Princess Marie noticed he didn't ask what she was doing there nor did he worry about her being cold like he normally would. His lack of care in itself caused her to feel even colder.
"I heard you were caught up by the gate," she said. "I wanted to make sure you're okay."
Though his words overlapped with hers because he already knew what she was going to say.
