Nothing happened between us

''Avery, you have company!'' Fiona whispered and Avery's body tensed up.

''Who is he? Can you see him face?'' Avery asked and stood up. She saw the shadow of the person coming out of the bathroom. There was a dagger in his hand.

''It's him. It's the same man who attacked us in the forest. Avery, get out of here. Run!'' Fiona said and Avery turned at once and ran out to the hall but she tripped on the table and fell down.

The man walked out with the dagger in his hand. Even though his face was covered, Avery could never mistake him for someone else. She remembered his stature very well.

''We meet again!'' The man said.

Avery moved back and tried to grab anything that her hand could reach.

''This won't do…'' Fiona said and suddenly entered into Avery's body. Since she was agile in nature, it was easier for her to pick anything at all. Fiona grabbed the nearest box book and threw it at the man and it hit the dagger off his hand.

Fiona immediately stood up and ran towards the door but the man grabbed her hair and threw her back into the room. When Avery's body hit the table, Fiona's soul was forced out.

''That's why you should have died. Now you have to pay the price for being nosy…'' The man said.

''Stop!'' Mariah said as she pointed a gun at the man. ''Put your hands behind you and don't try anything funny.''

The man turned and looked at Mariah and smirked. He stood up and held Avery up. he threw Avery at Mariah and made his way out through the open window.

''Avery…'' Mariah held Avery's body. She couldn't leave her and chase after the man.

….

Kai rushed into the house and saw Mariah inside the bedroom with the doctor. Avery was sitting on the bed with her head bandaged.

Kai sighed a relief and looked at her. ''Are you alright?'' He asked.

Avery's face turned red when she saw him. She nodded her head and looked away. ''I'm fine.''

''Did you see his face?'' Kai asked.

''Avery said it's the same man. I believe he wants both Avery and that suspect gone. This is serious.'' Mariah said.

''I'd be fine. I didn't know he would follow me to this place. I'm going to call the moving company to come and take what can be taken. I will throw the rest away.'' Avery stood up.

''You should avoid washing your hair for now. Do not let water get into the cut or it can cause serious infection. If you feel sick later on, take the medicine I prescribed for you.'' The doctor said.

''Thank you, Dr. Shen.'' Mariah said and followed the doctor out leaving Kai and Avery.

''You… didn't have to come. It's just my head. My head is like a brick, it will be fine after a few days.'' Avery said awkwardly.

''Since you are fine, I will take my leave now. I just came because I needed to fulfil my part of the deal I signed with your cousin.'' Kai said and turned to leave.

''I'm sorry! I shouldn't have accused you of that over the phone. And… thank you.'' Avery said.

''As long as you are safe. Take care of yourself if you don't want me to concern myself with you.'' Kai said before walking away.

Avery touched her head and sighed. Mariah entered and said to her.

''I called the moving company for you. Just pick what's important and I will take you to the gym. The moving company will come and pack everything tomorrow.''

'Okay!'' Avery stood up.

.....

Fiona's gym.

''Did something happen between you and Kai?'' Mariah asked after pulling over. When she didn't hear anything from Avery, she chuckled. ''No, don't tell me. That's between the two of you. I am just curious because you two seem awkward around each other.''

''Nothing happened between us.'' Avery replied.

''That's good. But you need to be aware of something before you come to work tomorrow. The rumors that you two have something doing together has already spread around. Try to be low key when you come in tomorrow.''

''I understand. Thank you!'' Avery got down from the car and picked her luggage bag. She entered inside the gym with Fiona.

Mariah was about to drive away when her phone started ringing. She looked at it and answered. ''Hello, Uncle. Okay, I will be there soon.''

Mariah hung up and drove away.

….

The Tonight Bar.

The dancehall was fully packed with people dancing and drinking to their heart's content. Mariah looked at the packed dancehall and frowned. She climbed the stairs and got into the elevator which took her to the second floor which was the VIP section. This place was reserved for only dignitaries and other important people that wanted to have fun and didn't want to be caught.

Especially, politicians, businessmen and celebrities. Mariah walked out of the elevator and turned towards room 95. She opened the door and saw her uncle, the senior police commissioner for the whole of Xing city. There were two women sitting next to him, feeding him fruits and wine.

There were three other notable people that Mariah knew. There were the Prime Minister and his assistant, Detective Gid, and a famous actor, Shen Yihan.

Mariah bowed respectfully and went to sit down. Her uncle, the City Police Commissioner gave the ladies a signal and the two stood up and left the room.

''Mariah is here… sit down, sit down.'' The commissioner said excitedly.

''Uncle, you called me here for…'' Mariah asked as she looked at the other people inside the room.

''Say hi to the Prime Minister. You know actor Shen Yihan, right? You said you loved the detective drama he did. You also know detective Gid.'' The commissioner said.

'Hi!'' Mariah said politely.

''Gideon, I had no idea that detective Mariah is your niece. No wonder she takes after you so much. She is quite righteous.'' Minister Boris said and chuckled.

Denis, the assistant of Minister Boris looked at Mariah carefully. When they eyes met, he shifted his gaze sharply but Mariah caught him looking at her before he turned his gaze away.

''Let me tell you, she is my pride. Mariah is not only good at what she does, she is also smart, beautiful and has great intuition.'' The commissioner bragged.

''That is expected of her. After all, she is your niece.'' The Minister added.

Watching the two of them go back and forth, trying to praise her disgusted Mariah.

''Uncle, I still have something doing at the police station so…'' Mariah didn't finish her question but her uncle knew what she wanted to say.

''Mariah, I heard you and the Prime Minister had a little misunderstanding because of Detective Sanders. Is that so?'' The commissioner asked.

''He wanted to take an officer under me away without following the right procedures. I can't allow that to happen. Besides, Detective Sanders did not do anything personally damaging to the Prime Minister, so I can't hand her over to his team.''

''I understand, Mariah. That is why Detective Gid is here. Even though Detective Sanders can't be punished because there is no evidence, we still need to appease the Prime Minister.'' The commissioner said.

''Uncle, what exactly do you want me to do? I really don't understand what you are saying.'' Mariah asked.

The Prime Minister turned to Denis, his secretary. Denis took out a file from his side and passed it on to Mariah. Mariah read the documents in it carefully and looked up.

''What is all this?'' She asked.

''As you can see, all that money is in Detective Sanders account. You said she was innocent and just being stubborn, but she actually was an accomplice of the criminal who raided the Minister's office and took the money that was supposed to go into the construction of the new art museum.'' Denis began to explain.

''The Minister has lost a lot of deals because of this money and once the public becomes aware of it, it will no longer be under our control. We don't want anything to happen to Detective Sanders either. We know that you favor her but she is a dangerous person. More dangerous than you can think of.''

''The criminal is in coma, the only person who can access the money is Detective Sanders but when we contacted her she made it clear that she will not take out the money in her name. Just a few hours ago, we got a message from the bank that all the money has being redrawn into a secret account and locked with a password. In short, the 50 billion dollars has disappeared from the bank as we speak.''

''Wait!'' Mariah raised her hand and Denis looked at her. Mariah turned to face Denis and asked. ''You mean to tell me that the money just disappeared from Avery's account and you have no idea where it went to?''

''Yes!'' Denis replied.

''How is that possible?'' Mariah asked.
