Despite my best efforts, I was unable to uncover any hidden significance in the text. When he said, "Swing by," he didn't mean for me to remain. True, but why would he? Previously, I had acted cowardly and fled.

If he had indicated that he didn't want to see me, he would have been more forthcoming about not leaving the door open for me.

While driving over, I was such a nervous wreck that it wasn't until I pulled into Carl's neighborhood that I remembered I'd forgotten to turn on the radio. I had spent the most of the trip thinking about what may happen when I visited his home in the solitude that pervaded my car.

I pulled into the driveway at night and walked up the stone walkway to the front door, stopping to stare at the illuminated doorbell button. The thing almost seemed mocking. If I rang it, I would have to confront Carl directly.
