The ache I felt wasn’t where his knife had sliced me open. It was buried further within. “I miss you too.”

He took one cautious step beyond the doorway of my chamber. “I’m working on it. On him.”

I gulped a breath. He’d claimed he wasn’t giving up, and the way he looked at me now, I knew he meant on everything. This guy was motivated, and he wasn’t going to stop while faced an impediment.

My pulse soared with hope.

When his phone chimed, disappointment produced a deep wrinkle in Carl’s brow. He looked at the television, then back to me. “It’s the second time they’ve paged me.”

I nodded and drew the blanket tightly around my waist, mustering the fiercest expression I could, hoping he’d comprehend my meaning. “Okay. Go do what you need to.”
