I pursed my lips in distaste and could feel how Devon's body reacted to her response.

"And you think I am going to let you dictate my life mom?"

Her expression suddenly changed as she said calmly. "Hasn't we done that until now, Devon?"

I sensed the air changing, but I couldn't read what it carried with it. So I remained silently attentive.

"No, you didn't dictate it. I allowed you to take decisions about my life because..." Devon abruptly stopped as if recalled something.
