The Siblings got back home, but life became more difficult. Whitney could not go to school or work. Meanwhile, Gracey would have nightmares every time she closed her eyes.
The scariest part was that she could not be sure that the incident would not repeat itself.
At that time, Natalie came to visit.
"I have to go back to school tomorrow," She told Whitney as the two of them sat down together. "Alright, remember to be careful and take care of yourself," Whitney smiled. Her friend's visit has been the only light in her life in the past few days. She was sad to let her go, but she knew there was no other option.
"My father wishes to rent out my brother's layer. Although it is just a room, there is a kitchen and bathroom. The rent is cheaper, too," Natalie said. She would be worried knowing their current situation.
"would uncle be willing to rent it to me?" Whitney knew her current situation. Many people would rather stay away than help them.
"Of course, I asked dad. I would not come over to raise your hope for nothing," Natalie said. She left out the part that she had spoken almost three days before she managed to convince her father. She even had to throw a childish temper to achieve her goal.
They were just given out their garage for rent. It should not affect them in anyways. Her father was scared that the warmer children would use his cover to escape, but she managed to convince him otherwise.
"Father, you watch Whitney grow up. She is not someone who would pay kindness with evil," She said. Her mother was the most fearful, but after her nagging for three days and nights, the couple had no choice but to agree, especially when Natalie said she could not go back to school when she was unsure of her friend's safety. After listening to her, the couple decided to rent the place to the siblings.
Whitney was like a daughter to them. If they could not even take a little risk for her, they felt that the years of treating her like their daughter would become a joke.
Moreover, Natalie would not risk harming her family for a friend. They knew their daughter had good judgment. Furthermore, Kevin Smart had never involved innocent people in his scheme.
"Thank you for putting in a good word for me," Whitney said. She was thrilled to hear this news. It's not that she had not thought of moving to a smaller apartment, but she was scared that no one would be willing to rent a place to them.
As long as Gracey and Kelly stay in Natalie's house, she will rest assured. Moreover, if she is able to convince Kevin Smart to take only her and leave her sister alone, Gracey and Kelly would be able to stay with Natalie's family, and they can act to be their guardians on the surface. Thinking in this direction, Whitney was relieved.
"you don't have to thank me, we are friends, and in this time of trouble, this is what I should do. Although it does not solve all your problems, it at least gives you a little shield," Natalie said. She felt very uncomfortable seeing the gratitude in Whitney's gaze. To her, what she had done can be viewed as a drop of water on a burning house.
" Then I would go with you later to discuss with uncle, " Whitney said. She knew that her friend was feeling uncomfortable.
"Are we really going to move into a single room?" Gracey asked. She had shared a room with Whitney for years. Now having to move into a smaller space did not go down well with her.
"Do you have objections," Natalie asked; she could tell that Gracey did not seem happy, which annoyed her. Things had developed to such an extent she could not believe that the girl wants to continue acting unreasonably
"No," Gracey shook her head, Even if she was indeed unhappy about the situation, it was really not the time for her to throw a tantrum.
"Good," Natalie said. "I will be going to shop for a bit. I have to take gifts back for my roommates and coursemate who help sent my assignment. You can come over around Five to discuss with dad," She turned to Whitney.
"Okay," Whitney thanked her with all her heart. How many people would risk getting implicated in their situation? It was indeed a blessing that Natalie was helping them.
"Why are you so grateful to her? It is not as if they are allowing us to live there for free," Gracey said when Natalie was gone.
"What kind of attitude is that? Given our situation, would anyone be willing to rent their place to us? Have you forgotten what happened to Uncle Brian two years ago?" Whitney rolled her eyes. She could not understand why her sister could still not tell left and right.
Gracey bit her lips, but she had nothing to say. Two years ago, the neighbours had come together to pressure the landlord to send uncle Brain away because there was a rumour that he had offended a top member of the devil's gang. He was sent out within two days. In their case, the person who wants them is The Devil himself. Renting out their house to them was like inviting fire to their house.
Gracey knew that her sister was brilliant. The reason why they have not been chased out of the house is because her sister deliberately used the devil's name to protect them. He was keeping an eye on them. Who would dare touch the devil's prey?
"Moreover, have you forgotten what I said in the hospital? Father's case is not just about the money. Uncle Felix said he had betrayed the devil. I am thinking of surrendering myself to him. Maybe with me to vent his anger, he might let you and Kelly be. At that time, Natalie's family could act as guidance to you and Kelly until you come of Age.
"Okay," Gracey said. She was relieved to hear that Whitney would use herself as a shield. If her plan is successful, then she will not have to worry about falling into any misfortune.
"Is there no other way?" Gracey asked. She was concerned for her sister's safety. But she was unwilling to work in the ring.
"If one can save the whole family, I would do it. This is my responsibility as an elder sister," Whitney declared. It was like she was surrendering to her fate.
