Chapter 26: Chaos and a Fate Worse Than Death

Daniel found Alix as she was painting the last few lines of a complicated series of runes around the Horsemen’s house.

“Is that mercury?” He asked and Alix nodded slightly, raising one arm to show where her sleeve had been rolled up so that she could draw her knife across the back of her forearm. The wounds were already healed by now but considering what he knew about her scars, Daniel wasn’t sure he was comfortable letting her self-mutilate regardless of how useful her blood was. “You really don’t want us leaving,” he said instead, “Do you not trust us?” Alix remained quiet for a long time, looking up to study his iridescent eyes and trying to decide how to answer.

“No,” it was rather simple when she finally did, “not with this.” He opened his mouth as if to argue, seemed to think about it, and closed his mouth again, his gaze sliding past her shoulder for a moment instead.

“Where's your Watcher friend?” Alix flinched, her lips pressing into a thin line.
