I walked up in the streets of Freeda, looking for a cab, it was quite quiet and the only sounds that filled the air were the trills from the frogs that were probably around the river side. The streets only got it's light from the houses and the point where there were no houses were dead black. After 30 minutes of walking, I heard a sound coming from a distance, it sounded like a car engine, then lights shun from a distance, as the car came into better view. Luckily for me, it was a cab.
'Hey' I waved at a cab, as it drove a little ahead before stopping. 'Where are you headed?' the cabman asked, peering towards my face. 'I'm going to 8 miles' I replied. 'Okay, that'll be 50 bucks' the cab driver said, looking straight ahead. '50 what?' I asked, with a hard tone. 'It's no problem, I'd go then' He drove the car a little forward and stopped, as I beckoned on him to
wait. 'Stupid cabbies' I said under my breath, going into the back seat. These cab drivers always took advantage of stranded passengers, he knew that there was no way I could get a cab at that time and so charged me so high. The journey back home, seemed a little longer than when I was going, maybe it was because I was running late or I knew Girra would have noticed I was out of bed.
'Could you move a little faster' I told the driver, tapping him a little on his shoulder. 'At least if not for anything, for the fortune you charged me.' I said quietly, as he looked at me through the rear view mirror. At this point, I regretted not driving my car, at least it would have saved time and cost, but anyways I was at home now and that was what was important.
Everywhere seemed quiet, I could hear the snore of the kids from their room, as I entered the house and made my way up the stairs. The loud "ding" was the sound that broke the silence. 'What the...' I turned round, cursing the clock under my breath, the clock had a way of getting on my nerves. I looked from the top of the stairs, to the wall in the dinning area, where the clock hung and saw that it read 1:00Am. Still thinking of what excuses to make to Girra, I opened the room door, walking blindly in the dark room, to the wardrobe to get a change of clothes, as I sneaked to the bed. What if she watched me all the while, was the thought that came to my mind when I laid on the bed. Well, the room was dark and I could barely see anything, but I hoped she didn't see me.
The sun from the window was what woke me up. I looked at the time from my phone that laid on my side, as I breathed easily, It was just 6:02am, the sun had risen early today and there was still time for me to prepare for work. It was quite out of the normal that Girra did not wake me up from sleep. It was a normal routine for her to wake up early and she would always wake everyone up, but today was different, she didn't bother waking me up or maybe I was the one who slept past my wake up time because I didn't sleep early.
'Hey hun!' I yelled from the room, as I went downstairs. The atmosphere seemed a little moody, it didn't have the usual morning vibe. Molly and Solly sat to eat at the dinning, while Girra ironed the clothes by the corridor that led to the kitchen. 'Hey dad, good morning' the two said, wanting to get down from their chairs for a hug. 'No, no it's alright, finish your meal.' I walked up to them, giving them pecks on their foreheads. 'Where's mom?' I asked, wanting to get her attention, maybe she'd notice me then, but she didn't seem to. 'Hey hun' I walked over to where she was ironing, giving her a peck on the neck, but she didn't still pay attention to me. 'Are you okay?' I had sensed that something was wrong, what if she noticed I wasn't in bed early last night?. 'We need to talk' she said, looking dour. 'Okay, I'm all ears' I had faced her squarely looking directly into her eyes, as she dropped the iron on the ironing board, then spoke up again.
'Where were you last night?' 'I.... I had an important meeting with Balley, and I.. didn't want to disturb you, that's why I didn't wake you up from sleep.' 'O... that's funny' she gave an unusual grimace, then continued. 'So that's your excuse, you don't think I should know where you go to now right?' she said angrily, as I thought of how I would convince her that I was with Balley. Girra obviously knew that I wasn't with another woman, we were weigh past that. The only other woman she knew I would have, would have a laboratory and chemicals, but Girra had her eye on me for these few months, she knew I was up to something and even though she did not know exactly what it was, I didn't want her to have an idea that it was about the genetic diseases, it would definitely break her.
'Look hun, it's fine if you don't believe me, just know that I didn't want to disturb you and I'm sorry. I'll definitely let you know next time' I held her shoulders, pulling her to an embrace, as she shrugged her shoulders off. 'Okay, so tell me why you sneaked into the room.' I felt my heart beat a bit faster, as I thought of what next to say. She actually saw me last night. 'Like..like I said, I didn't want to disturb you, don't you get me?' 'Okay, I'm gonna try to believe you, because I know you won't cheat on me for the world, but I know you're hiding something from me.' She cocked one brow higher than the other, but looked calmer. 'No no, I promise it's nothing, believe me hun' I said, with a lower tone than before, as I hugged her with a kiss. Deep down I knew hell was going to let loose if I told her. Though Girra was calm, she had a nervous wreck when it came to issues that concerned her mental health, I couldn't just let her know about GECA.
