Aiden stared at Alain. The seventeen-year-old young man flashed him a sweet, reassuring smile.
"Exactly how much money am I supposed to vouch for, every month?"
Aiden swallowed. He distrusted Alain, but he was offering to do the very favor that Jack refused to do. And it was not like Aiden was asking for money from Alain.
Why not take him up on the offer?
"Twenty thousand pounds."
It was not a small sum of money. Alain narrowed his eyes at Aiden, but he did not ask further questions.
"My savings are thrice the number, so I am good for lying. Just give my name to whoever you want."
It was only as expected. As Jack Matthews' heir apparent, Alain's monthly pocket money was equal to an executive's monthly pay.
"Thank you," Aiden said.
Alain wiped his hands dry with a paper towel before tossing it into the trash bin. He grinned mischievously at Aiden.
"You owe me, big brother. I hope you remember that."
Aiden expected as much. Alain was not about to let this favor go unreciprocated.
"I know."
Aiden bade Mrs. Wells goodbye and left Matthews' Boulangerie's headquarters soon after. He threw one last glance at the luxurious building that he just exited. He was not sure that he had struck a good deal by trusting Alain, but he did not have another choice at that point.
When Aiden came home that afternoon, he was extremely nervous. He had rehearsed the conversation that he was about to have with his grandmother many times in the afternoon.
After steeling his heart, Aiden told his grandmother that he had gone to visit Jack Matthews for the first time after twelve years of estrangement. He had asked to borrow some money, but Jack Matthews was not around. It was Alain who then offered to lend him money to pay for the leukemia treatment.
Grandma Thompson despised Jack Matthews. She also despised Cheryl Matthews for taking her daughter's place in the Matthews house.
On the other hand, she did not have much of an impression of Alain. Aiden knew that he had not done too badly when the wrinkles between Grandma Thompson's brows loosened slightly upon hearing that Aiden got help from Alain and not Jack.
"Grandma, you are free to confirm with Alain about the money if you want," Aiden said with a pounding heart. He prayed in his heart that Grandma Thompson would take him by his words and not make the effort to confirm his story. After all, they were talking about the Matthews. Both Grandma Thompson and Aiden avoided the Matthews like the bubonic plague.
To Aiden's greatest relief, Grandma Thompson did not insist on making a call. She sat on the couch in a pensive mood for a while. At night before she went to sleep, she pulled her grandson for a hug.
"Aiden, Grandma is terribly sorry. Sorry for making you go to meet with the Matthews today. If not because of me, you would never have to get involved with them again. Now we have incurred a huge debt because of my sickness. Aiden, I am so, so sorry."
The grandmother apologized again and again for being such a bother to her grandson.
Aiden put his arms around Grandma Thompson and hugged her tightly.
"Grandma, don't say that. There are only two of us in this family. You have taken care of me since childhood. It is my turn to take care of you."
Grandma Thompson sobbed softly into her grandson's shoulder while nodding. Aiden blinked away the anxiety in his heart. Finally. Aiden was not proud of it, but he finally managed to convince his grandmother.
It was the first time, and hopefully the last time he lied to his grandmother. All he had to do then was wait for some news from Nick. After a year, he would have paid for the installments fully. His grandmother was going to White Chapel to get proper treatment.
The next night, the vampire sent him a short message.
"Eighteen thousand for the first time. Yes or no?"
